Brutal Wind Chills Trigger Weather Warnings Across Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio

It’s been bitter cold throughout the United States, and the frigid temperatures are’t abating on December 15. Ohio posted record cold temperatures. Other states throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes Region region have been dealing with the aberrant cold.

The National Weather Service warned people in parts of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio to expect “very cold wind chills as low as 5 to 15 below zero,” on December 15. “WHERE…Portions of east central and southeast Indiana, northeast and northern Kentucky, and central, south central, southwest, and west central Ohio.” These areas were under a “hazardous weather outlook.”

“The cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” the NWS warned. “Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.” In Cincinnati, “Temperatures will dip briefly below zero in many locations Monday morning,” according to Fox 19.

“Into Monday, a large sector of the nation will continue to experience a cold blast that has been chilling residents to their bones, but there is an end in sight,” Accuweather wrote, adding that the cold weather will extend “from the Plains to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions will record high temperatures between 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit below typical December values into Monday” December 15. It will then start to lift in some areas, Accuweather reported.

Other Areas of the United States Should Also Expect ‘Below Average Temperatures’

Other areas of the country are also feeling the cold or aberrant temperatures. “Lake effect snow should begin to wrap up across the Upper Great Lakes this afternoon, and then the Lower Great Lakes this evening,” NWS wrote on December 15.

“Troughing over the Eastern U.S. will contribute to below average temperatures for much of the region through tonight, before beginning to moderate on Tuesday,” the post says. “Surface high pressure over the Southeast will generate freezing temperatures across the Gulf Coast. Freeze Warnings are in effect from southeastern Texas to southern Georgia/northern Florida. Elsewhere, upper ridging in the West will expand east over the coming days. Several temperature records may be tied or broken across the West due to the unusually warm conditions.”

“Dayton technically broke two records for temperatures today!” WHIO wrote on December 14. “Today’s low was -2 degrees…this temperature is the coldest low to occur for any December 14th on record since recordkeeping started at the Dayton International Airport in 1935!” the site reported.

What was the second record? “The high of 10 degrees today goes down as the coldest high ever recorded for all Dayton records for any December 14th,” WHIO reported.

“Cities that have borne the brunt of the cold in the Midwest, like Duluth, Michigan, and Green Bay, Wisconsin, have recorded departures more than -12 degrees from the historical average so far this December,” Accuweather reported.

In addition to the record cold, Ohio was bracing for more “lake effect snow.” According to The National Weather Service, Ohioans were advised to expect “heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations up to two inches” through 7 a.m. EST on December 15. “IMPACTS…Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”
