Spirit Airlines has been going through a restructuring period after filing for bankruptcy earlier this year.
The budget airline announced last week that they would be cutting down their flight destinations, which would ultimately lead to cutting staff. The company revealed on Monday that they would be furloughing more than one third of their flight attendant staff in order to align with their new fleet size and schedule.
“As part of our ongoing restructuring, we are taking steps to align staffing with our fleet size and expected flight volume,” a spokesperson for Spirit told AirlineGeeks. “We recognize the impact of this decision on affected Team Members, and we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process.”
What You Need to Know:
Beginning December 1, 2025, 1,800 of Spirit’s 5,200 flight attendants will have to say goodbye to the company. Spirit will be offering voluntary furloughs beginning in November.
“We have been able to mitigate harm for our workgroup until this point,” the Association of Flight Attendants — which reps the Spirit staff — said. “The problem is that the significant reduction of aircraft and flight hours requires a much higher reduction in force and the company is clear that a furlough is necessary.”
Back in July, the airline announced cuts to its pilot staff, cutting approximately 270 pilots. Those cuts go into effect November 1.
