Against all odds, the Indiana Fever have advanced to the semifinals of the WNBA playoffs. The Fever have been hit hard by injuries this season, with no less than five players suffering season-ending ailments.
The most notable of those injuries was Caitlin Clark’s groin injury that ended her year before the postseason started. Clark, the former college superstar and transcendent face of the league, missed several games with injuries this year. Eventually, the team made the decision to shut her down in order to prioritize her long term health.
Despite being out for the year, Clark has been a vocal and fierce supporter of her Indiana teammates throughout their run. This weekend, she says that support has come with a literal price.
Clark’s Controversial Comments
“Refs couldn’t stop us,” Clark said after the Fever defeated the Atlanta Dream to force a decisive third game. Her comment was in reference to perceived advantages she felt Atlanta had during the series, despite the Fever eventually coming away with the win.

“Got fined $200 for this lol,” Clark said, referencing her post from earlier in the week. She appeared to not be bothered by the fine, adding several laughing emojis.
“BENCH MOB WILL BE EVEN MORE ROWDY TOMORROW LETS GOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!,” she said, noting that she plans to support the Fever when they take on the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday in the semifinals.
Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham poked fun at the fine, saying “that’s really gonna break the bank for her. Starting a GoFundMe now!” Cunningham is also out for the season with a knee injury, and the pair have rallied around their healthy teammates during the improbable playoff run.
The Fever Continue Their Playoff Run
The Fever will look to make their first WNBA Finals appearance since 2015, but they’ll need to unseat a potential dynasty in order to do it. The Aces have won two of the last three WNBA titles, and they’ll look to win their third in four years this season.
Star player A’ja Wilson just won the MVP for the fourth time in her career, an award Clark hopes to win next season when she returns. When Clark is healthy, she’s one of the league’s best players and by far its most marketable.
The Fever will officially continue their playoff journey on Sunday when they travel to Las Vegas to face the Aces in Game 1. We’ll see if Clark, Cunningham and the rest of the injured Fever players are as vocal with their support following the star player’s fine.
