In a coordinated operation, Cambodian police have arrested 86 foreign nationals suspected of being involved in a large-scale fraud operation. This operation took place on the outskirts of Phnom Penh and resulted in the arrest of 57 South Koreans and 29 Chinese. Authorities seized 30 cell phones and 126 computers to analyze the evidence collected.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Police informed a South Korean delegation led by opposition politician Kim Seok-ki about the situation. The delegation agreed that the arrested South Koreans were voluntarily involved in cybercrime. These arrests are part of a broader initiative carried out since June by Cambodia’s Commission to Combat Online Fraud.
Since the commission’s inception, 3,455 foreigners operating in 92 online fraud centers have been arrested. These measures are part of a larger international fight against cybercrime, which is also supported by the USA. In September, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 10 Cambodian individuals and entities that ran cryptocurrency fraud out of casinos.
The increasing prevalence of cybercrime poses a significant threat to international security. Experts warn that such fraud operations not only cause financial losses but also undermine trust in digital platforms. International cooperation is crucial to effectively address these threats and hold those responsible accountable.
