Presidential candidate André Ventura, also leader of Chega, said on Saturday, October 25, that he is confident that he will win the elections in the first round and stated that he is “the firm hand that the country needs”.
“I am confident that I will win the presidential elections in the first round and I am convinced that, here in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, I will also win the presidential elections in the first round”, he stated in the municipality of São Vicente, Madeira, where he witnessed the inauguration of the new municipal executive, led by Chega.
“I really want to win the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, he said, highlighting that the archipelago has given “great results” to the party and, therefore, he returned to the island during the electoral campaign.
André Ventura argued that by saying that Portugal needs “three Salazars”, an expression used on Friday in an interview with SIC, he intended to highlight that a firm hand is needed to put the country in order.
“What I wanted to say was that the country needs to be put in order and the country needs a firm hand to be put in order and I am that firm hand that the country needs”, he maintained.
The presidential candidate also said voting for the other candidates would leave “everything the same”.
“If you want everything to remain the same and with the same ease, vote for the other candidates”, he stated, reinforcing: “Anyone who wants to continue with the same system we have in terms of justice, in terms of security, in terms of the fight against corruption, frankly, don’t vote for me.”
André Ventura stressed that he wants to be an “interventive president” and with a “firm hand” to “give a signal to the Republic”.
“If you want the opposite, there are the other candidates. That’s what I meant by ‘three Salazares needed’”, he explained.
Ventura also said that his grandmother already used this expression and considered it “very popular” to allude to the dictator António de Oliveira Salazar given the “disorder and mess” in which the country finds itself.
