Cape Town motorists urged to book online, use drive-through as licence renewals spike

Cape Town motorists are also being encouraged to skip queues and move their licence renewals online as demand surges, as expected, at customer offices early in the year.

The City says many centres are experiencing heavy foot traffic as residents settle outstanding accounts and renew vehicle licence discs.

City officials are urging motorists to plan ahead by booking appointments online or using digital renewal options.

Cut the queues: How to book you car licence appointment online

According to the City, renewing a vehicle licence disc online is quick and straightforward.

  • After making the online booking, motorists receive an SMS reminder that includes a direct link to the City’s booking system.
  • An appointment can be secured within minutes, along with a reference number.
  • That reference number allows customers to be assisted at a dedicated counter on arrival – which significantly reduces waiting times at busy offices.

Motorists are encouraged to book before visiting, especially during peak periods.

Car disc renewals even speedier at drive-throughs

To make the process even easier, Cape Town launched its first drive-through licence disc renewal facility in Brackenfell last September.

The service allows motorists to renew their car licences without leaving their vehicles.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis tested the process from start to finish and was able to renew his car licence disc in FOUR minutes.

The drive-through operates on weekdays from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00. It is important to note that only card payments are accepted at the facility.

The City says the Brackenfell site is part of a broader push to modernise licensing services.

“Over the next few months, we will explore additional drive-through facilities and other innovations to make the City the leading licensing and renewal agent,” said Siseko Mbandezi, the City’ Mayco member for Finance.

“Accounts can also be paid online via eServices, and we thank customers and ratepayer for their payments, especially amid the competing demands of January.”
