Cape Town records hundreds of accidents in the past 10 days

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services recorded over 230 accidents on the City’s roads this past week.

According to a statement, in the past 10 days, 162 motor vehicle accidents and 74 pedestrian-related incidents were recorded by the department.

The stats were recorded between Friday, 27 June and Sunday, 6 July, when the City experienced particularly wet weather conditions.

The City said that these numbers were a stark reminder of the importance of increased vigilance on the roads during wet weather conditions, for both motorists as well as pedestrians.

Troublingly, these stats also did not include incidents that were not reported to a central point, including accidents that did not result in injuries, where the parties involved reported it directly to the nearest police station.

“We caution road users all of the time about adjusting their behaviour to account for the specific conditions. Motor vehicle accidents cause huge emotional and financial strain, even if just a fender bender. They also have the potential to cause significant traffic delays. Let this be a reminder to everyone to slow down in general, but especially in poor driving conditions,’ Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said.
