Cape Town secures more seasonal direct flights to the US

Starting 29 October this year, travellers will have more flight options when travelling to and from Cape Town and the United States.

One weekly service, which currently operates between Johannesburg and Newark, will instead be reassigned to Cape Town.

The move strengthens Cape Town’s direct transatlantic network while slightly reducing Johannesburg’s frequency.

United Airlines adds more frequency to Cape Town

United Airlines, the carrier behind the adjustment, will cut Johannesburg–Newark flights from daily service to six times per week.

In turn, Cape Town will see expanded operations: four weekly flights to Newark and three weekly flights to Washington, D.C.

This is part of the airline’s ongoing strategy to better match flight schedules with seasonal demand. The Mother City, which draws a surge of international visitors during the Southern Hemisphere summer, is becoming an increasingly important gateway for US travellers. Meanwhile, Johannesburg remains a year-round hub with a strong business travel base.

United Airlines initially sought approval to rebalance these routes earlier this year, arguing that greater flexibility would enable it to better meet shifting travel patterns.

With Washington, D.C. now added to the Cape Town lineup, South African travellers have more nonstop choices to the US capital, while American tourists gain easier access to the Mother City’s beaches, wine country, and cultural attractions.

What other airline, do you think, should offer more seasonal flights to the Mother City?
