Holders Newcastle United will continue the defence of their Carabao Cup trophy with a quarter-final tie against Fulham.

Eddie Howe’s side, who beat Premier League champions Liverpool in last season’s final, booked their place in the quarters with a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Fabian Schar headed Newcastle in front at St James’ Park before club-record signing Nick Woltemade doubled the hosts’ lead.

Newcastle’s quarter-final opponents Fulham beat Wycombe Wanderers on penalties in the last-16 stage.

Elsewhere, Premier League leaders Arsenal will take on Crystal Palace in the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Brighton 2-0.

Mikel Arteta, who has taken Arsenal four points clear at the top of the table, rung the changes for the visit of Brighton but an inexperienced Gunners team was still strong enough to progress.

Ethan Nwaneri broke the deadlock on the hour mark before Bukayo Saka came off the bench to put the last-16 tie to bed.

While Arsenal advanced, defending Premier League champions and last season’s runners-up Liverpool crashed out, losing 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace.

FA Cup holders Palace scored two quickfire goals before half-time to take control of the tie and their job was made easier by 18-year-old substitute Amara Nallo’s late red card just 12 minutes after he was introduced.

A convincing victory at Anfield earned Crystal Palace a quarter-final against the league leaders at the Emirates Stadium.
