Cardi B wins legal battle over alleged ‘fingernail’ attack

A Los Angeles jury has cleared US rapper Cardi B of assault after a legal battle with a security guard. The guard claimed the star scratched her face with a fingernail.

The guard, Emani Ellis, sought R473 million in damages, alleging Cardi B cut her cheek and spat on her outside a doctor’s office in 2018.

THE CARDI B ASSAULT CASE

Cardi B was four months pregnant at the time, a fact she had kept private.

During the trial at the Alhambra courthouse, Cardi B described how Ellis followed and filmed her on a phone. She refused to give her space or privacy, according to BBC.

THE ALLEGED ATTACK

The rapper recalled a heated argument but denied physically attacking Ellis or spitting on her.

She told the court, “I work all day and I work hard for my money, for my kids, for the people I take care of. So don’t think you’re going to sue me, and I’ll just settle.”

The jury took about an hour to reject all claims of assault, battery, emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment.

CARDI B’S TESTIMONY

Cardi B told reporters after the verdict, “I’m grateful the truth came out. Please don’t bother Ms Ellis or her family now that this is over.”

The case gained attention for Cardi B’s colourful testimony and changing wigs and outfits each day.

THE FINGERNAILS

Her long fingernails were a key point. A supporter outside the court held a sign saying, “If the nail doesn’t fit, u must acquit,” jokingly referencing another famous courtroom moment.

The dispute happened while the rapper was at an obstetrician’s office that had closed early for her privacy.

WITNESS TESTIMONY

Witnesses said Ellis was the aggressor in the verbal exchange. The doctor and receptionist also supported Cardi B’s account.

This case highlights the importance of privacy rights and facing false accusations with courage.

As the rapper said, “I stood up for myself and my unborn baby.” Her victory sends a message about fighting unjust claims wherever you are.
