Millions of Nationwide customers to nab £100 Fairer Share payment in DAYS – check if you’ll get the cash

NATIONWIDE customers will start getting £100 free cash in a matter of days.

Millions of customers will receive the payment through its Fairer Share scheme, which rewards loyal members who save or borrow with the building society.

British ten-pound notes in a wallet.
Nationwide has said the payments will be made between June 18 and July 4

The first payments will hit bank accounts on June 18 – meaning there’s less than a week to go.

Nationwide has said the payments will be made between then and July 4.

However not all Nationwide customers will be eligible.

To receive the payment you will need to have opened a current account with Nationwide on or before March 31, 2025.

You must have also had at least £100 in savings, or owed £100 or more on a mortgage by that same March deadline.

Plus you’ll need to have used your account between January 1 and March 31 this year.

Still, about four million customers are set to benefit from the cash payment.

A total of about £410million is being paid out.

The building society has run its Fairer Share scheme for three years in a row now, so if you open a current account now you may have a chance of getting the free cash next year.

However there is no guarantee Nationwide will run the scheme again.

Last year, Nationwide paid out £385million to 3.85million people.

Separately, it also paid out £50 to around 12million customers between April and May.

Nationwide also recently offered exclusive access to a top savings account rate for its customers.

Those who already bank with the building society can open up a Member Exclusive Bond account which has a very attractive 5% interest rate.

The 18-month-fixed term account will net you £759 in interest if you put in the maximum £10,000.

What other banking perks can you get?

Banks often pay you to switch to their current accounts, and there’s four currently offering switching freebies.

First Direct is giving away £175 to people who switch to its 1st Account.

You just need to open an account and set up at least two direct debits or standing orders within 45 days.

You will also need to pay in £1,000 and make five debit card payments within the same timeframe.

TSB is handing out £100 cash but £15 a month in cashback for six months to those who switch to its Spend and Save account.

Plus you can get either £120 credit towards a hotel booking via Expedia’s Travel Credits website or 12 months of activity tickets with the National Activities Network.

Existing customers with Nationwide can also get a free £200 bonus if they switch a non-Nationwide current account into a new or existing FlexDirect account.

You’ll also get 5% interest on current account balances up to £1,500 for a year.

Meanwhile Santander is giving out £180 free cash to those who switch to its Edge account.

Plus there’s a linked savings account that pays 6% interest on up to £4,000 for the first year.

Where to find the best savings rates

Many savings accounts offer miserly rates meaning that money is generating little or no return.

However, there are ways to get your cash working hard. Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to make sure you money is getting the best interest rate.

Easy access savings accounts offer flexibility for customers, meaning they can dip in and out of cash when needed. However, the caveat is that rates can change at any time.

If you’re keeping your money in an easy access account, you’ll need to keep checking whether it’s the best paying account for your circumstances and move if not.

Check in at least once a month to see what is happening in the market.

Check what is offered by your bank – sometimes the best rates are for customers only.

But do search the wider market as often top savings accounts are offered by lesser known providers.

Comparison sites are a good place to check for the top rates. Try Moneyfactscompare.co.uk or Moneysupermarket.

You can search by different account type. You’ll usually get a better interest rate if you can lock your money away for a fixed amount of time, but it’s always a good idea to keep some money in an easy access account in case of emergencies.

Don’t overlook regular savings accounts often pay some of the best rates, but you’ll need to commit to monthly payments. This can be a great way to get into a savings habit while earning top rates at the same time.

Horrifying moment ‘killer’ slashes cops with sword after he ‘knifed boy, 14, to death in ferocious rampage’

THIS is the horrifying moment an alleged killer slashed at cops with a sword after he knifed a 14-year-old boy to death in the street, a court heard.

Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, ambushed Daniel Anjorin, 14, on April 30 last year as he made his way to school in Hainault, East London.

Monzo allegedly stabbed Daniel Anjorin to death[/caption]

Jurors heard Monzo also tried to kill female cop Yasim Mechem-Whitfield, Henry De Los Rios Polina, Sindy Arias and Donato Iwule in the horror.

Footage released by police shows the chilling moments after the rampage as brave officers attempted to stop Monzo.

He was also captured striking an ambulance with the sword as paramedics arrived to treat Daniel.

As an officer attempts to help the victim on the ground, Monzo then approaches while wielding the weapon.

Cops tell him to “drop it” but the so-called “mystic” replies: “Do you believe in God?”

He then flees through nearby gardens before being chased down an alleyway by police.

The footage shows a brave cop attempt to approach Monzo, who then slashes at them with a sword as an officer yells “police officer stabbed”.

He also stabs another cop in the arm as they desperately try to block the sword with a baton.

The 20-minute horror only comes to an end when Monzo is Tasered and then handcuffed in a back garden.

The court heard the “talented” martial artist spent nearly £1,000 on swords in December 2023 before cancelling the order.

He then bought two handmade Katana swords for £427.80 on February 21, 2024, with delivery coming through to his home in early April.

Previous footage played to jurors showed Monzo branding a sword “freaking sexy” as he lunged around holding the weapon.

The court heard he killed and skinned his own cat at home before setting off on the rampage after believing he was in the “Hunger Games”.

He carried out the attack with “murderous intent” over a 20-minute period on April 30, it was said.

The Old Bailey heard Donato was the first to be attacked when Monzo “deliberately” drove into him in his van.

As he was knocked into a garden, Monzo allegedly got out the van and slashed his neck with the Samurai sword.

Donato managed to escape as emergency crews were scrambled to the residential street.

Meanwhile, Daniel was walking to school “minding his own business” when his life was “snuffed out in an instant”.

Monzo allegedly used “extreme” force on the youngster, who suffered a “devastating and unsurvivable chopping injury” to his neck and face.

The court heard PC Mechem-Whitfield arrived at the scene of the horror and “bravely pursued” Monzo through alleyways after he tried to flee.

The officer was “struck three times” and suffered significant injuries in the horror.

Monzo then burst into a house to attack a couple in their bedroom as their child slept next to them, it was said.

He shouted out “do you believe in God?” about four times then began to attack Henry De Los Rios Polania with the sword before attempting to stab his wife.

Jurors were told their lives were only spared because the youngster woke up and started to cry.

NHS systems were checked and revealed there were no documented mental health concerns or access to mental health services by Monzo.

The court heard Monzo does not dispute he carried out the attacks.

But the jury will have decide “why he did so and what his state of mind was” at the time.

His brother Eduardo told the court Monzo had consumed ayahuasca – a hallucinogenic plant-based drink commonly used in South America – during a stay at a remote retreat in the Amazon.

He said he was “concerned” as the drink has caused a “negative response” in some people.

Eduardo said his brother began to withdraw from his family when he returned from the retreat.

The court heard no trace of DMT – the hallucinogen found in ayahuasca – was detected in Monzo’s system.

But prosecutors said his “conduct was brought about by self-induced intoxication in the form of drugs” that led to a “psychotic disorder”.

Monzo, of West Beckton, Newham, denies murder, four counts of attempted murder and one of wounding with intent.

The trial continues.

The Club World Cup is finally here – but who is it really for?

President Trump Signs Executive Order Establishing FIFA Task Force

After dislocating his shoulder towards the end of 2023, Jude Bellingham has been playing through the pain and aided by strapping protection.

The Real Madrid midfielder is finally set to undergo surgery in the off-season to ensure his shoulder heals properly, but will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks as part of his recovery.

New boss Xabi Alonso surely wants his talismanic midfielder back as early as possible next season as the Spaniard looks to mount a challenge on defending league champions Barcelona.

Real, however, have decided otherwise, preferring Bellingham to play through the pain for a few weeks longer at the upcoming Club World Cup to try and help his side become the first winners of the new, expanded tournament.

Such a decision is evidence enough of the divisive nature of FIFA’s latest brainchild. Spearheaded by current president Gianni Infantino, the revamped Club World Cup was not something clubs asked for. Fans and players certainly didn’t either.

But as the 64-game tournament gets underway in the United States, the waters of opposition have undoubtedly become muddied, and a new reality appears to have emerged.

What do players think about the Club World Cup?

After a hectic season of club football, which included an expanded Champions League, few of Europe’s top players appear keen to shorten their summers further by playing in the Club World Cup.

‘We players would love to have some holidays, and some time for our bodies to rest,’ Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, a vocal critic of the tournament, recently said.

‘My City teammates are not exactly overjoyed about the tournament either. But it’s now right in our faces, and there is nothing we can do about it.

‘If we take part, then of course we want to win it. But if we reach the final, then the time period for us to recover ahead of the new season will become even shorter.’

Is the Club World Cup irrelevant? 😬 It’s been reported that not even 25,000 tickets have been sold for the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup between Inter Miami and Al Ahly that’s held in a 65,000-seater stadium. So is the interest from the fans just not there? #fifaclubworldcup #clubworldcup #cwc #fifacwc #clubworldcup2025 #clubworldcup25 #cwc25 #gianniinfantino #infantino #tickets #footballtickets #america #us #usa #mamelodisundowns #intermiami #realmadrid #mancity #chelsea #bayern #psg #atleticodemadrid #porto #benfica #intermilan #borussiadortmund #juventus #alhilal #football #footballtiktok #footballnews #metro #metrosport #metrosportuk

While not everyone has been so forthright, Akanji is not alone. Earlier in the season, fellow City star Rodri said players may consider strike action over fixture congestion. Many more have privately expressed concerns.

‘When I speak to PFA members who are playing in the Premier League, in Europe and for their country, fixture congestion is the number one issue they raise,’ Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive Maheta Molango told Metro last November.

‘Those players know how privileged they are to be in that position, but there are physical limits to how far they can be pushed. Right now, they are in a situation where they are essentially part of a year-round football calendar; it never stops. We’re starting to hit a tipping point because they are not robots.’

What do fans think about the Club World Cup?

Players may not be universally keen on taking part, and it appears that the reception from fans has been similarly mixed.

Sluggish ticket sales could see as many as 45,000 empty seats for the tournament’s opening fixture between Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Al Ahly.

Sales for games involving high-profile European sides have fared better, while South American teams are expected to travel in their numbers for a chance to see their teams as well as ageing stars such as Messi and Luis Suarez in action.

Previews - FIFA Club World Cup 2025

But many fixtures involving lesser-known teams from further afield seem destined to take place against the half-empty backdrop of vast US stadiums.

That mixed reception has also manifested itself in the TV coverage. FIFA found itself initially unable to shift broadcasting rights before DAZN took them off the governing bodies’ hands for a remarkable $1billion (£787million) figure.

The not-so-subtle $1bn investment in DAZN from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund weeks later may also explain where the funding for the bid came from and what FIFA is hoping to achieve off the field of play with this competition.

What do clubs think about the Club World Cup?

Real Madrid Unveil New Signing Trent Alexander-Arnold

But while players and many fans appear apathetic, most clubs appear to have embraced the opportunity that the revamped format has offered with both hands.

For smaller clubs, the exposure and opportunity to test their mettle against Europe’s best might be considered reward enough.

But for the tournament’s bigger sides, the financial upside is likely the most eye-catching element.

FIFA’s rankings will grant Europe’s top-ranked sides £29.6m just for participating, with a potential £97m on offer should they win all their group-stage games and then the entire tournament.

Club World Cup Round-by-round prize money breakdown

On top of a participation fee, clubs will receive prize money as follows:

  • Group Stages: £1.5m for a win and £800,000 for a draw
  • Round of 16: £5.8m
  • Quarter-Final: £10.1m
  • Semi-Final: £16.2m
  • Runners-up: £23.2m
  • Winner: £30.0m

Perhaps then, it’s no surprise that Real were happy to spend £10m for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s early release from Liverpool in time for the tournament.

There are, of course, downsides. Playing a tournament during the transfer window will surely complicate summer recruitment, let alone pre-season.

England boss Thomas Tuchel has already suggested that Arsenal and Liverpool will have an advantage over Chelsea and Manchester City in the league next year due to the latter two’s participation in the Club World Cup.

But in an era of more stringent financial regulation and PSR rules, the opportunity to bank nearly £100m from just seven games’ work is far too alluring.

The second edition of the revamped tournament won’t take place until 2029, but reports suggest that Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United – as well as a host of other top European clubs – are keen to see the tournament expanded to ensure they can share in the future financial benefits.

None of that should come as much of a surprise – many of these clubs happily signed up to the Super League before its quick demise. Perhaps now the Club World Cup is seen as the next-best option.

Players may not be keen, football’s vast fanbase may still be unconvinced, but clubs and their owners appear to be all in. For now, that might be all that matters.
