How to choose a mattress

When choosing a new mattress it is important to think about how you sleep!

Find the right mattress that supports your sleeping style. Side sleepers typically require a softer mattress for added cushioning, while back and stomach sleepers benefit from a firmer one for proper support. When shopping for a child, choose something that supports their growing body.

Consider your budget. To ensure you’re getting the best price on your chosen new mattress, always shop around and compare prices to find the best deal. or hold out for the regular sales or special promotions that take place throughout the year. You can also open the live chat box and speak with a company representative to discuss the specifics of the available deals.

Decide on the type of mattress you want. From pocket sprung or memory foam to hybrid or orthopaedic, there are a plethora of mattress designs to choose from. Each has its pros and cons, so it’s essential to conduct thorough research before making a decision.

While a mattress can be pricey, it’s an investment that’ll give you years of restful sleep – totally worth it!

Where to buy mattresses in the UK?

Many online retailers now offer mattresses in a box, providing shoppers with a wider choice, varied price points, and ease of installation.

For shoppers that prefer trying before they buy, you can buy a mattress at a range of furniture and homeware shops, but you’ll get the best deals at specialised mattress retailers, including:

How to spot a good deal on a mattress?

When researching mattresses, you’ll quickly discover there are always deals to be had – no matter what type of mattress you’re looking for.

Brands like Simba and Emma often run regular offers, and stores like Dreams and Bensons for Beds hold sales with discounts on select mattresses.

If you know you need a new mattress soon, January sales can be a great time to buy, with generous stock clearances and significant discounts.

However, if you can’t wait for sale events, then make sure to shop around and compare prices before parting with your money.

You may also want to consider upgrading your bedding or adding a mattress topper while you’re at it.

What is the best month to buy a mattress?

While it’s true that mattress retailers tend to drop prices on certain days, such as bank holidays and during big shopping events, you’ll find a great mattress deal in pretty much any month of the year.

According to The Sleep Foundation, many mattress brands introduce new models in mid-to-late spring.

This means that the prices on older models are often slashed dramatically, so spring could be the most sensible time to buy a mattress.

Should I wait until Black Friday to buy a mattress?

Mattresses need to be replaced every six to eight years: if yours is on the way out, you’ll probably find yourself desperate to buy a new one as soon as possible.

Black Friday takes place in November, so there’s not much time left.

Although it’s one of the best times to buy a mattress for less, there are risks involved with waiting until the shopping holiday.

As many people buy mattresses on Black Friday, those with the biggest discounts tend to sell out quickly.

You can generally find a good deal at any time of the year, so it might be best to shop the sale now while your favourite model is still in stock.

How much do mattresses cost?

A good spring mattress doesn’t have to cost much more than £150 for a double.

Memory foam mattresses tend to be a little more expensive, but you can find good quality doubles from £300.

Hybrid mattresses, which contain a mix of foam and springs, are more expensive still and can cost anything from £400 to £1,000 and above for a double.

Other factors to consider when purchasing include the length of the trial period you’ll receive (most internet-only brands offer 100 nights), as well as shipping costs, which can quickly increase your overall costs.

Some of the online-only brands, such as Emma, offer free delivery.

Which is the best bed in a box company?

Opinions on this are constantly evolving as newer and more innovative designs emerge on the market.

Most of the top bed-in-a-box brands have thousands of five-star reviews, so you can trust that there are plenty of quality options out there.

However, a few names consistently pop up in the best mattress lists.

Brands like Emma and Simba are recognised not only for their top-rated mattresses but also for their excellent customer service and delivery.

You can’t go wrong with any of these!

How often should you change your mattress?

The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every seven years, but this is just a guideline.

If your mattress is in good shape and still comfy, you can keep it longer.

However, if you’re sleeping better in hotel beds or waking up sore, it’s probably time for a new one.

The best sleep routine and environment

Thomas Høegh Reisenhus, TEMPUR® sleep specialist & sleep counsellor, reveals the key components of a good bedtime routine and environment...

A sure-fire way to facilitate a better night’s sleep is to practice good sleep hygiene.

Establish a sleep routine that works for you and stick to it.

This will help your body establish a consistent, natural sleep-wake cycle which can do wonders for your overall sleep quality.

As such, try to avoid making up for lost sleep with a lie-in.

Instead of sleeping in, spend your morning reading a book in bed or having a leisurely coffee in the kitchen.

Ensure that your bedroom, bedding, and sleepwear are fit for purpose too.

The ideal sleep environment is dark, quiet, and cool – much like a cave.

If you find unwelcome sources of light are keeping you up, consider investing in an eye mask or black-out curtains.

Adding soft furnishings can be a great way to reduce noise, with the surfaces having an absorptive quality, but if this doesn’t work, consider embracing a soothing soundtrack to block it out.

In terms of temperature, try to keep your bedroom at 18°C. You can further reduce the risk of waking up due to overheating by ensuring that all your bedding and sleepwear is made with natural, breathable materials such as cotton and linen.

Bear in mind that everyone is different; what might work for most, may not work for you!

Whilst knowing how much sleep you should get, how to overcome common barriers, and practicing good sleep hygiene can facilitate a great night’s sleep, if you continue to struggle with sleep or fatigue persistently, do not hesitate to visit a doctor or health professional for support.

TV channel broadcasts VIDEO GAME highlights of World Cup qualifier in embarrassing blunder

A TV channel in Serbia has gone viral after a bizarre on-air blunder.

Nacionalna Televizija Happy – best known as Happy – was meant to show highlights from Serbia‘s win over Andorra on Tuesday.

Aleksandar Mitrovic hit a hat-trick as the Serbians ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in the World Cup qualifier.

But fans watching in Serbia were treated to an unexpected view on Happy’s post-match news bulletin.

The channel appeared to broadcast footage from a VIDEO GAME rather than the match itself.

Happy’s news anchor can be heard describing the goals from Mitrovic at the Dubočica Stadium.

Footage shown on screen however looked to be taken from Konami’s eFootball.

The gameplay was shown on screen for more than 20 seconds before the segment ended.

Anchors on the channel did not reference the blunder, per Informer.

Serbia and Andorra are both in Group K alongside England, Latvia and Albania.

Ex-Fulham striker Mitrovic’s three goals were his fourth international hat-trick.

The 30-year-old has netted 68 goals in 79 games for Al Hilal since joining the Saudi side in 2023.

Mitrovic has been linked with a return to the Prem this summer.

Manchester United, Everton and West Ham have been linked with a move for the former Newcastle forward.

Reports suggest it would take £40million to prize him back from Al Hilal.

Crystal Palace receive last minute takeover bid from Donald Trump pal that could rescue Europa League hopes

NEW YORK JETS owner Woody Johnson has launched a bid to buy John Textor’s minority stake in Crystal Palace, according to reports.

Textor, 59, has been trying to flog his shares as Uefa threaten to throw Palace out of next season’s Europa League.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and Aaron Rodgers before a game.
Getty
Woody Johnson has launched a bid for Crystal Palace[/caption]

The Eagles qualified for the Europa League by virtue of lifting the FA Cup last month.

As Textor, who owns a 43 per cent stake in Palace, is majority owner of French side Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League, the Eagles’ place in Europe has come under threat.

Uefa rules dictate that two teams under the same ownership cannot compete in the same competition.

Textor could have placed his shares into a blind trust by March 1 to avoid this issue, but with Palace’s FA Cup triumph still appearing to be a long shot at the time, the American businessman did not.

Palace chiefs are currently desperately trying to convince Uefa bigwigs that Textor has no involvement in day-to-day goings on at the club.

The Missouri-native has long been thought to be trying to flog his shares.

And according to Sky Sports, Jets owner Johnson has made a bid.

Johnson, 78, served as US ambassador to the UK during Donald Trump‘s first administration.

Last month it was reported that the New Jersey-native may even try to buy a controlling stake in the Eagles.

Long-serving chairman Steve Parish owns around 10 per cent of the South London club, having helped to save them from going bust in 2010.

Americans David Blitzer and Josh Harris own 36 per cent, with Textor possessing a 43 per cent stake.

Parish and Textor are said to have fallen out in 2023.

And last year, the latter attempted to buy Everton, before being beaten by compatriot Dan Friedkin.

Johnson bought the New York Jets in 2000, with the NFL franchise now estimated to be worth around $6.9bn.

Under Johnson’s ownership the Jets moved to MetLife Stadium, where next year’s World Cup final will be held.

Emmerdale star ‘struggled’ filming soap’s ‘weird’ intimate moments as she breaks silence on sexy scenes

EMMERDALE star Roxy Shahidi has admitted she struggled filming intimate scenes on the soap.

Speaking to former co-star Matthew Wolfenden, Roxy opened up about how she felt having to kiss her co-stars – and it’s safe to say she’s not a fan.

Matthew said: “They decided to try to put David and Leyla back together — do you remember? — and we had to do a kissy scene. It was the weirdest thing, wasn’t it?

“Because it’s alright when you’re doing those scenes with… (people you don’t know so well).”

She said on their podcast The Celebrity Side Hustle Roxy said: “I really struggle with them, because I am someone, and I know it sounds daft as an actor because people listening will be saying, ‘It’s your job.’

“It is, and you do get on with it, but for me personally, I’m so weird about personal space.

“I’ve just never felt comfortable with it.”

She added: “It’s always made me anxious.

“I always get a bit awkward, but the best way I found to deal with it is to almost choreograph it like a dance.”

The actress left the show in 2024, and bowed out after her character, Leyla was killed in the tragic limo crash.

A source close to the telly star said at the time: “Roxy has adored her time on the soap and has made so many happy memories since first joining when she was 17.

“The cast have become like family to her and she has grown so much as an actress, but now feels like the perfect time to spread her wings and try something new.

“She is really excited about her meaty exit storyline, which will see her character Leyla die on screen.

“She’d rather go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered.”

The Giant Tuscan Olive Tree has been reduced from £399.99 to just £149.99.

The deal, available from Gardening Express, helps to save shoppers a whopping £250.

And this tree is the perfect addition to a sun-drenched garden or patio.

Place this olive tree in a large planter or directly in the ground to create your own Tuscan terrace at home.

This plant is said to thrive in any well-drained bright spot of your garden.

The grey-green leaves will remain all year as well as the tiny creamy-white flowers that eventually develop into the green fruit.

It will give your garden Mediterranean-style finish, making you feel like you’re on holidays without leaving your home.

This plant flowers during the summer, with the olives ripening in autumn.

However, be sure to shield these plants from harsher winter winds by planting in sheltered corners of your garden or moving pots into a conservatory during cold weather.

These trees have long life spans, with some even growing to be hundreds of years old.

And since olive trees can reach heights of 20 to 30 feet, this makes the perfect natural privacy barrier for your garden, but it may take some time.

Shoppers raved about the plant in the review section of Gardening Express.

They rated the olive tree a perfect five stars.
