TV presenter Ade Adepitan has challenged people to spend a week blindfolded or in a wheelchair to experience the accessibility issues faced by disabled people.

The wheelchair basketball Paralympian told Metro that not enough progress has been made to make transport, housing and other key infrastructure accessible.

He warned that most disabled people are being denied the opportunity to get into sports because of a lack of resources and support.

Ade told Metro: ‘Disabled people are still very much marginalised in the UK.

‘You are losing so much talent. It stops people with disabilities playing a big part in society.

‘It is shocking that so many people are being neglected by society and not given the same access or opportunities.’

Speaking as he is announced as the host of the 2026 Scope Awards, run by disability charity Scope with Metro as the official media partner, Ade called on non-disabled people to experience what it was like to live with accessibility issues in modern Britain.

The athlete, who lost the use of left leg after contracting polio as a child, said understanding the challenges faced by disabled people would make it more likley they are included in planning decisions.

Ade said: ‘All I have to say is spend a week in a wheelchair, or spend a week blindfolded, and tell me what you make of life.

‘You will probably feel like you are living in a country that has just come out of a war.’

As an example of barriers affecting disabled people, the presenter said he recently interviewed a doctor who had become blind.

The doctor described being forced to walk on the road with his children because of cars blocking the pavements.

Ade said this thoughtlessness towards disabled people had put the doctor’s life at risk as well as his children’s just to complete the school run.

According to a November 2024 survey from the National Centre for Accessible Transport, more than 90 per cent of disabled people face barriers when using at least one mode of transport.

Disabled people make 38 per cent fewer journeys using transport than non-disabled people – a figure that had not changed in ten years.

‘Change starts from the bottom up,’ Ade added.

‘The only way we are going to make change is if we come together as communities.’

‘We also need leadership which is inclusive of disabled people. We are the most incredible problem solvers.’

Born in Nigeria, Ade and his mother moved to the UK at the age of three to join his father in East London.

There he began playing wheelchair basketball and soon became a member of Team GB.

With the team he won at the 2004 Summer Paralympics and gold at the Paralympic World Cup in 2005, the year he was also awarded an MBE for services to disability sport.

From there, he launched a career as a commentator and became one of the main presenters for Channel 4’s coverage of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Ade says that many disabled people are being denied the chance to get into sports like he did because of a lack of resources and basic support.

He explained: ‘I am in a fortunate and privileged position. I have access to sport in ways that many non-disabled people wouldn’t have.

‘Schools are still not equipped to give disabled people opportunities, but schools are where a lot of people’s passion for sport begins.

‘But being able to do these leisure activities is a luxury.

‘Only when you feel financially secure, physically secure, and emotionally secure – then you can start looking for a sports club.

‘But if you haven’t got all of those other aspects of your life sorted, which many disabled people won’t, then how do they even begin to take part in the first place.

‘People say to me, “How can I go out and play basketball when I can’t even get a job?”’

According to Sport England, disabled people are almost twice as likely to be physically inactive compared to people without a disability.

Ade will host the 2026 Scope Awards at the Kia Oval in April.

He said: ‘To be hosting the awards is an honour.

To have awards that celebrate disabled people who are doing amazing things, it is crucial.

‘It is even more important that the people without disabilities hear these stories.’

The full shortlist of nominations for the Scope Awards will be announced later in February and available on the Scope website.

Wayne Rooney suggests Man Utd and Arsenal should have signed £79m Liverpool star

Wayne Rooney has suggested Manchester United and Arsenal should have signed Hugo Ekitike ahead of Liverpool instead of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres.

Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool were all in the market for new strikers during last summer’s transfer window.

United signed Benjamin Sesko in a £74m deal from RB Leipzig after missing out on Sporting star Gyokeres, who completed a £64m move to Arsenal.

Premier League champions Liverpool, meanwhile, spent £79m on Ekitike before splashing out another £125m on Alexander Isak.

Ekitike has enjoyed a bright start to his Anfield career despite Liverpool’s disappointing title defence, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, ten alone in the Premier League.

Sesko, in contrast, has been Manchester United’s only underwhelming summer signing with just five league goals, although he was the hero on Sunday as his injury-time goal sealed a thrilling 3-2 win over Fulham.

Gyokeres has also attracted criticism despite Arsenal topping both the Premier League and Champions League, having scored just three league goals since mid-September.

The Sweden international is becoming a more regular contributor for Arsenal, however, netting four goals in his last six appearances in all competitions.

Rooney believes Gyokeres is ‘making a difference’ to Arsenal despite his somewhat underwhelming numbers and ‘having an impact’ on their title charge.

‘We saw what Gyokeres did at Sporting, I know it was obviously a different country but he was scoring more goals than anyone and was absolutely on fire,’ he said on The Wayne Rooney show.

‘I’ve backed Gyokeres this season and people have given me a bit of stick but I still think he’s making a different to Arsenal, I really do.

‘He’s occupying defenders and that’s helping the team. I know he’s not got the goals or assists you’d want from your centre forward but I still think he’s having an impact.’

Despite defending Gyokeres, Rooney insists he has been far more impressed by Liverpool’s summer signing Ekitike, who scored twice in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United.

Asked whether, given his praise of Gyokeres, he would take the Arsenal striker over Ekitike, Rooney replied: ‘No.

‘Ekitike and [Granit] Xhaka at Sunderland have probably been the two best signings in the Premier League. I really enjoy watching Ekitike play.

‘His second goal [against Newcastle] in particular was brilliant, it reminds me of Romario. A little toe-poke goal but it’s instinctive.

‘He is the type of player I like to watch. He’s not a number nine, he’s not a number 10. He drifts out wide, he gets on the ball, brings players into the game and he can score goals.

‘So he’s got a bit of everything really.’

Rooney also discussed the difference between Ekitike and big-money Manchester United summer signing Sesko, who has lost his place in the team.

‘I really enjoy watching those type of players [like Ekitike],’ Rooney said. ‘He’s got that arrogance and confidence.

‘If you look at Sesko for instance, he looks like he needs a bit of guidance and a bit of help when he’s on the pitch.

‘I know he scored the winner today thankfully but he looks like he needs a bit of guidance whereas Hugo Ekitike it looks like you can just put him on the pitch.

‘He’s got that swagger about him which I think you need to be at that top-level.’

Peter Mandelson quits Labour Party after more Epstein links emerge

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 26: Britain's ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, speaks during a welcome reception for British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, at the ambassador's residence on February 26, 2025 in Washington, DC. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on his first visit to Washington since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House. Starmer's trip comes shortly after he announced an increase in UK defence spending, ostensibly as a signal to Trump that the UK is prepared to bolster Europe's security, and as he aims to broker a fair peace deal for Ukraine amid Trump's warming relations with Russia. Labour grandee Lord Peter Mandelson has resigned his membership of the party after the latest batch of Epstein files revealed more of his links to the billionaire sex offender.

Documents released by the US Department of Justice at the weekend show thousands of pounds were paid to Mandelson and his husband Reinaldo Avila da Silva by Epstein.

Those payments continued after the disgraced financier had been released from prison.

Mandelson was sacked as the UK’s ambassador to the US – seen as one of the top jobs in British diplomacy – last year over his friendship with Epstein.

In a letter to Labour Party general secretary Hollie Ridley on Sunday night, he said he feels ‘regretful and sorry’ about the stories that emerged in the past two days.

He continued: ‘Allegations which I believe to be false that he made financial payments to me 20 years ago, and of which I have no record or recollection, need investigating by me.

‘While doing this I do not wish to cause further embarrassment to the Labour Party and I am therefore stepping down from membership of the party.’

Mandelson has been a major figure in Labour politics for four decades, and had two spells as Business Secretary under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

But he has often attracted controversy over his long career, resigning twice from his Cabinet positions over accusations of dodgy dealings.

Emails in the latest release include one in which he tells Epstein he was trying to get then-Chancellor Alistair Darling to ‘amend’ a tax on bankers’ bonuses – while he was Business Secretary.

He also suggests JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon should ‘mildly threaten’ Darling.

Meanwhile, newly released images from Epstein’s archive include one showing Mandelson in just his underwear and a T-shirt speaking to an unidentified woman.

Mandelson became a member of the House of Lords in 2008, and now faces calls to be stripped of that position too.

SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn reacted to the resignation news with a post on X saying: ‘Starmer was too weak to remove him. Now he must be booted out the Lords.’
