UK’s busiest train station reveals new multi-million renovation with huge grand terminal and outdoor gardens

THE UK’s busiest train station is set to receive a stunning multimillion-pound revamp – which will include a grand terminal and outside gardens.

Incredible concept photos showed what the state-of-the-art station would look like once the face-lift is complete.

They included cutting-edge architectural feats such as new pedestrian routes, bold station interiors, a picturesque balcony and a stylish entrance.

The groundbreaking plans for the new upgrade will make the station future-proofed and ready to accommodate over 200 million people for the decades ahead, according to Network Rail.

Their application to give the iconic station a colossal transformation has recently been approved by City of London.

The new vision will see the station become more spacious, better connected between its different lines, and much more accessible.

Chief Executive of Network Rail, Sir Andrew Haines, said: “The station proposed in this application is absolutely what London needs.

“An accessible, inclusive, world-class multi-modal transport gateway to the heart of London – designed to serve the City, all Londoners, and everyone who travels through it.”

The historic station is in much need of an upgrade, as since the last major renovation, its passenger numbers have tripled.

There is a lack of step-free access and the basic facilities can make transport difficult.

It is also plagued by heavy congestion at peak times.

Long and windy passages can also confuse travellers trying to get from one line to another within the huge station.

The much-needed revamp is set to alleviate these issues while giving Liverpool Street a stylish and modern aesthetic.

London’s Transport Commissioner Andy Lord said: “Network Rail’s vision for the station gives us an opportunity to work together to provide the excellent levels of customer satisfaction we want everyone to experience as they travel across our networks.

“We welcome that these plans include a comprehensive step-free solution for those using the Underground.

He added: “At the heart of these plans is an unshakeable commitment to safety, top-tier performance, and delivering a transport system for London that is not only efficient, but environmentally sustainable.”

The revolutionary scheme will also help boost long-term economic growth across the City of London.

According to Network Rail, the station’s transformation could increase the City of London economy by up to £4.6billion per year.

This would come thanks to increased visitor numbers and a small tax change which would draw in more cash.

Liverpool Street station opened i n 1875 and ever since it has grown in parallel with London’s iconic Square mile.

Network Rail said: “It is essential that the station is modernised to meet the demands of a 21st-century transport network and continue supporting the economic vitality of both London and the wider UK.”

Former Man Utd defender appointed by Huddersfield as he joins Lee Grant’s revolution at League One club

FORMER Manchester United player Paul McShane is joining Huddersfield as an assistant coach.

Ex-United keeper Lee Grant was appointed Town boss last month[/caption]

McShane began his near two-decade playing career with the Red Devils before spells with Hull, West Brom and Reading.

And he teams up with former United goalkeeper Lee Grant at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers appointed Grant – a former assistant at Ipswich – last month after a lengthy managerial search.

Huddersfield sacked Michael Duff in March with the club seventh in League One.

Club legend Jon Worthington was put in charge for the remainder of the campaign.

But Town lost 10 of their last 12 league games, eventually finishing 14 points outside the playoffs.

McShane has now joined Grant’s backroom staff in West Yorkshire.

The 39-year-old teams up with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, a former youth coach at Liverpool.

Jonathan Robinson, Steven Gerrard’s No. 2 at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, also joins the League One setup.

Grant has already been backed by wealthy American owner Kevin Nagle in the transfer market.

Huddersfield have so far brought in highly-rated Joe Low from Wycombe, along with Sean Roughan, Marcus Harness and Ryan Ledson.

Grant told the club website: “I am thrilled to welcome Marc, Paul, and Jonathan to Huddersfield Town – three exceptional professionals who join us as Assistant Coaches.

“Their diverse backgrounds, dedication, and commitment to excellence will be invaluable to us as we continue to grow and build something special at this club.

“Each brings a unique outlook and energy that aligns with our values and future aspirations.”

Huddersfield have suffered an alarming slide after dropping out of the Premier League in 2018.

Carlos Corberan almost led the club back to the Prem in 2022 through the playoffs.

But the club fought relegation from the Championship for multiple seasons before dropping to League One in 2024.

They had been expected to mount a strong push for promotion last term.

Duff led his side on an impressive 16-game unbeaten run midway through the campaign.

But the Terriers lacked bite where it mattered, with their 58 goals the lowest of any team in the top half.

OTHER SPOONS NEWS

Spoons is bringing back The Brunch Burger for the Father’s Day weekend, from Friday to Sunday.

It returned two years ago after a ten-year hiatus and was a fan favourite at the time with punters calling it “legendary”.

Last month, Spoons also closed a beloved pub in Coventry – The Spon Gate.

Elsewhere, Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink.

There are also veggie options available, which are served between 8am and midday.

The Sun also exclusively revealed in January Spoons had upped the price of a host of popular drinks and menu items across its pubs.

The chain bumped up prices on drinks by 15p while meal deals were increased by 30p.

The price rises saw the cost of a Guinness at the London and South Western branch in south west London go from £4.66 to £4.81.

Meanwhile, the price of a Strongbow increased from £3.24 to £3.39.

How can I save money at Wetherspoons?

PUB-GOERS love Wetherspoons for its competitive pricing and low-cost meals - but did you know there are more ways to save money?

Senior consumer reporter Olivia Marshall explains how.

Free refills – Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in

their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

‘I would love that’ – Liverpool urged to hijack £60m Manchester United transfer

Liverpool FC v West Ham United FC - Premier League
Arne Slot has been urged to hijack Manchester United’s transfer move (Picture: Getty)

Emile Heskey wants Liverpool to hijack a Manchester United transfer deal as the Reds look to bolster Arne Slot’s squad this summer.

Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are closing in on a huge deal for his former teammate Florian Wirtz.

The Anfield club are also pushing to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and want to sign another attacker to strengthen Slot’s attacking firepower.

Liverpool won the Premier League by ten points last season but know reinforcements are needed ahead of their title defence with Manchester City expected to come back stronger and Arsenal well-placed for another title tilt.

At the other end of the table, Manchester United made Matheus Cunha their first summer signing and are now working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo has verbally agreed a move to Old Trafford but United are yet to meet Brentford’s £60m valuation for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season.

The Cameroon international was linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United before Manchester United emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature.

But Heskey wishes Mbeumo was heading for his former club Liverpool, insisting he would have been a perfect addition to Slot’s squad.

‘It’s hard to ever say Liverpool make mistakes in the market, because their strategy is usually just so solid,’ the former England striker told Prime Casino.

‘I would have loved to have seen Bryan Mbeumo at Anfield with Liverpool though. He’s got loads going for him.

Who have Man Utd and Liverpool signed?

Manchester United

In: Matheus Cunha
Out: Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof

Liverpool

In: Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi
Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher

‘He was someone that is tried and tested in the Premier League for a few years as well. His work rate’s astounding. He knows where the goal is. He’s very, very technical and understands the way that Liverpool would want to play.

‘So it was interesting to see that they never really went in for him.’

Mbeumo looks set to join a Manchester United team that finished just 15th in the Premier League last season and will not be involved in any European competition next year.

Why struggling Man Utd still appealed to Mbeumo and Cunha

Asked how United were able to attract Mbeumo and Cunha despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, Heskey added: ‘The thing is with United is that they still have the pull to attract players.

‘Normally, Mbeumo would be wanting Champions League football, knowing what the club are going to do.

‘Even now, without Europe, in a transitional phase, United can still get hold of players like him and Matheus Cunha.

‘It’s a bit like when I chose Liverpool, who weren’t yet at their best. I always supported Liverpool, but I always wanted to be in on the ground floor on their comeback.

‘I understood the assignment, and I saw where things were going if they went well.

‘Mbeumo probably feels the same. He can be part of something that can be great again.

‘Let’s be honest, it’s Liverpool and Manchester United when you’re abroad. They’re the only two clubs who matter to the rest of the world.’
