What’s worse than your favourite TV show getting the axe? It being cancelled on a cliffhanger, of course. With unresolved plots and character-shaped holes, it can often feel like a messy, heart-wrenching break-up. There are many reasons why a show might get cancelled unexpectedly, from low viewing figures to high production costs. Whatever the explanation, it doesn’t make losing your go-to series any easier. Here, we look at seven shows that were cancelled, leaving fans with the most excruciating cliffhangers. (Pictures: Metro.co.uk)
1. Santa Clarita Diet
This Netflix horror-comedy ran from 2017 to 2019 and birthed three seasons. It followed husband and wife real estate agents, Joel and Sheila, who lived ordinary suburban lives until Sheila became a zombie after eating infected clams at a restaurant. After contracting the Serbian zombie virus, Sheila became undead and developed cravings for human flesh. In order to survive, she ended up targeting ‘bad’ humans and feasting on them. However, fans of the show were left mortified after the season 3 finale, when Sheila bit Joel in a bid to turn him undead. When the show was cancelled, it left the plot unresolved. 2. iCarly
Nickelodeon’s iCarly ran from 2007 to 2012, and then from 2021 to 2023 with the iCarly revival. During the first run, Carly Shay, along with her friends Sam and Freddie, had their worlds turned upside down when their web show became an instant smash. The trio, along with Carly’s older brother Spencer, were forced to navigate their newfound success. OG fans of the show who tuned in for the revival will know that the show ended abruptly, which made for the most infuriating cliffhanger. In the final episode, ‘I Have a Proposal,’ Carly and Freddie were about to kiss, but were interrupted by a stranger. (Picture: Nick/Everett/Shutterstock)

Kaitlin Olson starred as Mackenzie ‘Mickey’ Molng, a foul-mouthed con woman from Rhode Island, who was forced to raise her niece and nephews after their parents (her sister and husband) went on the run for fraud and racketeering. After moving to her sister’s wealthy neighbourhood to take on parental duties, she realised the kids were incredibly spoiled. Despite fans loving the show, The Mick was cancelled by Fox in 2018 after two seasons, and ended on a major cliffhanger: Sabrina, Mickey’s niece, was electrocuted and put into a coma. 4. Hannibal
Hannibal followed Will Graham, a talented criminal profiler, who had a unique ability to empathise with serial killers. Under the instruction of Jack Crawford, the head of Behavioral Sciences of the FBI, he was put under the supervision of Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist who was secretly a cannibalistic serial killer. After Hannibal learned of Will’s ways, he began to manipulate him and push the boundaries of his sanity to try and turn him into a killer. After three seasons, which ran between 2013 and 2015, Hannibal was left on a cliffhanger: Will and Hannibal leapt off a cliff together, with no way to know if they survived. (Picture: NBC)
5. Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s fantasy drama series, was cancelled after two seasons in November 2023. The plot centred around orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov, who was hunted by dark forces after she unleashed an extraordinary power that could restore her war-torn world. The show ended on three cliffhangers, the main one being Alina’s new shadow-summoning abilities. Other unanswered questions included the Darkling’s fate and several characters moving onto pastures new. (Picture: Netflix)
6. How I Met Your Father
How I Met Your Father was a 2022 American sitcom, and if you couldn’t already tell, a spin-off series of How I Met Your Mother. In a nutshell, it focused on Sophie, who told her son the story of how she met his father. The show was cancelled after two seasons, but not without leaving fans on three huge cliffhangers: Sophie and Jesse got back together, and fans wanted to see how their relationship evolved. Elsewhere, Sid and Hannah’s marriage was falling apart. Did they split, or did they work things out? Finally, it was revealed that Valentina and Charlie had a son. (Picture: HULU)
7. Benidorm
Benidorm was one of ITV’s most beloved sitcoms — a TV show about British holidaymakers who enjoyed a week’s all-inclusive at the 3-star Solana Resort in Benidorm. The show ran from 2007 until 2018, and had 10 seasons. It was the home of iconic characters such as the Garvey family (including the foul-mouthed, chain-smoking Madge Baron), Middlesborough pair Jacqueline and Donald Stewart, sleazy barman Mateo, and Blow & Go salon owner Kenneth du Beke, to name a few. While the initial plan for the finale was for the Garvey family to return and buy the Solana hotel, low ratings meant this didn’t happen, and the show received an underwhelming ending.
