Arriving in tenth spot this week is this 2020 adaptation of Jack London’s classic novel which is finding new life on Netflix after the pandemic cut its cinema release short. The movie follows the adventures of a dog named Buck, who is abducted from his home in California and sent to the Yukon, where he has a string of adventures and forms a powerful bond with a frontiersman (Harrison Ford). It got a mixed response from critics, with many praising Ford’s performance but less certain about the CGI animal effects – but overall this one’s worth a look. (Picture: Merie Wallace)

Aka the film tipped to land George Clooney another Oscar nomination, Jay Kelly has got off to a decent, if not exactly barnstorming, start in the Netflix charts this week. Clooney stars as the titular actor, who uses a filming break to take an impromptu trip to Europe, in a last-ditch attempt to bond with his daughter before she starts university. If you want a break from blockbusters and fancy an intelligent, charming comedy-drama with a star-packed cast (Adam Sandler is in particularly good form here as Jay’s manager Ron) then this should fit the bill. You couldn’t get a ruler between the films in the midsection of this week’s chart, with this festive romcom edging ahead of Jay Kelly by a mere smidge. Minka Kelly takes the lead as Sydney Price, a driven executive sent to Paris to buy a champagne vineyard for her bosses before Christmas. Tom Wozniczka is Henri Cassell, the heir she needs to deal with. You can see where this is going as things start out tense between the two of them but inevitably turn slushy. Troll. (L to R) Gard B. Eidsvold as Tobias, Mads Sj??g??rd Pettersen as Captain Kris COURTESY OF NETFLIX ?? 2022
With Troll 2 keeping Netflix viewers hooked (more on that later) it’s no surprise to see its 2022 predecessor make a return to the chart. The Norwegian action epic sees a disparate group of people brought together to save the day after an ancient giant troll is awakened in a local mountain and starts to wreak inevitable havoc. Can they stop the monster in its tracks before it destroys Oslo? We would give you a hint but that would be trolling. (Picture: Netflix)

There are many weeks when this sparkling new romcom would have brought its festive cheer to the top spot – but My Secret Santa has to be content with the runner-up position, in spite of racking up an incredible amount of views over the past week. This bit of seasonal fluff stars Alexandra Breckenridge as a single mother who needs to get a job to pay for her daughter’s snowboarding lessons. So what does she do? Disguises herself as Father Christmas in order to land the job of ski resort Santa. So far so good. Until, with crushing inevitability, she starts falling for her boss. In the season of good cheer and fun times, Netflix viewers have flocked, en masse, to a movie about a huge monster posing a grave threat to humanity. Yep, the sequel to 2022’s smash hit has clocked up a huge number of views in its opening week, seeing off every last grotto, snowman and sprig of mistletoe in its wake. The sequel is based on a project to build a railway through the Dovre Mountains and how it awakens a sleeping giant after 1,000 years of captivity. Cue the inevitable mayhem as Oslo once again comes under threat. If Troll 2 carries on like this, it’s on track to not only crush the Christmas competition but also steal the title of Netflix’s biggest non-English language movie of all time. From, of all things, the original Troll. Now that’s one big battle. (Picture: Netflix, Inc. All Rights Reserved)
