His son Tim confirmed the devastating news in a touching statement.

It read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.

“He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.

“A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather.”

Tributes have flooded in, racing pundit Jim McGrath wrote: “A one off, brilliant trainer, great company, down to earth, yet fun and straightforward to deal with.

“Loved life and people. Condolences to all the family and his many friends. RIP.”

Fans added: “Heartfelt condolences to you and your family Tim. One of the greatest racehorse trainers in history. A legacy that will never be forgotten.”

Another said: “What a man and what a dynasty he founded. So sorry to hear of the passing of Peter Easterby – a very fine Yorkshireman indeed.”

The three-time Champion Trainer started with seven horses at his Habton Grange stable in the 1950s.

He went on to become one of the most decorated in the sport and he is the only to have ever recorded over 1,000 winners in Britain in both flat and National Hunt racing.

Back-to-back Champion Hurdle winners Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon were trained by Easterby in the 70s and 80s.

Saucy Kit, Alverton and Little Owl were other horses that rode to glory for him.

His son Tim succeeded him as a trainer when he retired in 1996.

Moment van driver ploughs into off-licence before making off with £11K of cigarettes & booze as shop crumbles around him

A BRAZEN thief used a stolen van to smash through a shop wall and steal thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes and alcohol.

Shocking footage shows the moment Kayne Palmer, 33, rams into Bestwood Hill Food and Wine in Nottingham using a stolen vehicle in October 2023.

Stock and shelves fly across the room as the burglar reverses into the off license at speed.

Brickwork continues to crumble around the van as Palmer nabs £8,000 worth of fags and booze.

He can be seen on CCTV stuffing thousands of cigarettes into a bag before discovering it has a hole in the bottom.

In a panic, Palmer then grabs a shopping basket which he uses to carry the stolen goods.

He also swipes a till which he loads into the van before fleeing the scene.

Palmer caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the shop and stole £7,897 of cigarettes and alcohol, as well as £3,239 of cash.

The frightened shop owners were upstairs at the time of the ram raid and were woken by the loud bang of the van smashing into the store.

They called the police but by the time they got downstairs the crook had gone.

Hours before the 5am raid, Palmer broke into a nearby house and stole keys to the work van along with a handbag and bank card.

He carried out a 24-hour crime spree less than a month later, successfully breaking into five houses and attempting to force his way into another.

He was finally caught when officers spotted him fence-hopping over gardens following an afternoon break-in in Bestwood, Nottingham.

Palmer admitted to a series of offences, including eight burglaries, multiple counts of dangerous driving, assault and driving while disqualified.

He was jailed for seven years at Nottingham Crown Court last Friday and was banned from driving for five-and-a-half years.

Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “He is a clear danger to society.

“During his crime spree he stole a vehicle and drove dangerously, putting members of the public at risk.

“He crashed into street furniture, people’s property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public.

“Palmer also stole another vehicle and used this in a ram raid of a locally owned shop.

“Here he stole thousands of pounds worth of cash and products and destroyed the victim’s shop, ruining their business and livelihood.

“He didn’t hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed.

“This showed his desperation and flippancy about the offences he carried out, regardless of the detrimental impact on his victims.”

Chelsea to be dumped out of Club World Cup in last 16 with shock champions beating City in final, predicts supercomputer

A SUPERCOMPUTER has predicted a surprise Club World Cup winner and Chelsea to crash out in the last-16.

The revamped 32-team tournament hosted in the United States gets underway on June 15.

A supercomputer conducted by BoyleSports, who offer the latest Club World Cup odds, has simulated matches 10,000 times to come to its results.

Chelsea are the heavy favourites to top their group featuring ES Tunis, Flamengo and Los Angeles FC.

But the number crunching machine reckons the Blues will finish second behind the Tunisian side.

That would see Enzo Maresca’s men face Benfica in the last-16, who are set to top a tough group of Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors and Auckland City.

And in a shock result, Chelsea will be beaten 3-1 by the Portuguese giants.

On the other side of the draw, Manchester City have also been predicted to come runner-up in their group of Juventus, Al-Ain and Wydad Casablanca.

Yet they will hit top form in the knockout stages, seeing off Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juve to reach the final.

The supercomputer reckons they will face surprise package Benfica in the showpiece on July 13 in New Jersey.

And they will incredibly beat another Premier League club, this time defeating City 2-1 to take home the trophy.

PSG are set to have a hangover from Champions League glory and crash out to Palmeiras in a last-16 thriller.

The Brazilians and Argentine juggernauts River Plate will be the best from South America, both going as far as the quarter-final.

But Botafogo will give it a good go, coming out of their group instead of Atletico Madrid.

Mega-rich Saudi Arabians Al-Hilal will progress from their group of Real Madrid, RB Salzburg and Pachuca before losing in the last-16.

The bookies have Real, City, PSG and Bayern as the favourites.

Government finally reveals who will get winter fuel payout after U-turn

The vast majority of pensioners will receive the winter fuel payment this year after the government reversed course on its hugely unpopular decision to cut the benefit.

Last year, only around 1.5 million people in England and Wales received the payment, which is intended to help keep their homes warm in cold weather.

But Chancellor Rachel Reeves has now announced around nine million of the UK’s 13 million pensioners will get the benefit in their bank accounts.

The new threshold includes anyone with an income of under £35,000 a year.

Reeves argued cutting the payments, worth up to £300, was a ‘tough decision but a right decision’ at the time it was made, not long after Labour’s election victory last summer.

She said: ‘It is also right that we continue to means test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring eligibility to everyone including the wealthiest.

‘But we have now acted to expand the eligibility of the winter fuel payment so no pensioner on a lower income will miss out.

‘This will mean over three-quarters of pensioners receiving the payment in England and Wales later this winter.’

Those who do not want to receive the payment will also be able to opt out, the Treasury said.

Who will get the winter fuel payment this year?

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said the winter fuel payment will still be means-tested – all that’s changing is the threshold that allows people to claim it.

Last winter, it was only paid out to people also receiving pension credits. This winter, it will go to all pensioners with an income of less than £35,000.

That only applies to those in England and Wales. The devolved authorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland will get a funding uplift to allow them to meet the same threshold.

If pensioners feel they do not need or want the payment, they will be able to turn it down.

Those with an income above the threshold will also receive the allowance, but it will then be reclaimed from them in tax.

No specific action needs to be taken by

Age UK Charity Director Caroline Abrahams said the announcement will ‘bring some much-needed reassurance for older people and their families’.

She added: ‘Of course, we would much have preferred it had the government taken this approach last summer but we are pleased it means that older people can look ahead to the coming winter with more confidence.’

The Chancellor announced last July that the payment would only be available to those who also claim pension credit, as the government confronted what it described as a £22 billion ‘black hole’ in the public finances.

Her decision sparked an enormous backlash which is thought to have contributed to Labour’s poor performance in May’s local elections.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said: ‘This humiliating U-turn will come as scant comfort to the pensioners forced to choose between heating and eating last winter.

‘The Prime Minister should now apologise for his terrible judgment.’

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: ‘Finally the Chancellor has listened to the Liberal Democrats and the tireless campaigners in realising how disastrous this policy was, but the misery it has caused cannot be overstated.’
