A-HA star Morten Harket reveals life-changing health diagnosis saying it could end his pop career

EIGHTIES A-ha pin-up Morten Harket has Parkinson’s disease.

The Take On Me crooner, 65, said: “I’ve got no problem accepting the diagnosis.”

The star added: “Part of me wanted to reveal it. Acknowledging the diagnosis wasn’t a problem for me; it’s my need for peace and quiet to work that has been stopping me.

“I’m trying the best I can to prevent my entire system from going into decline.

“It’s a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects.

“There’s so much to weigh up when you’re emulating the masterful way the body handles every complex movement, or social matters and invitations, or day-to-day life in general.”

Parkinson’s disease is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain and affects communication between neurons in the brain and muscles.

Although the disease is not fatal, victims’ condition gradually worsens over time.

It is the most widespread – and the fastest-spreading – neurological condition in the world.

Last year Norway-based Morten underwent neurosurgical procedures in which electrodes were implanted deep inside both sides of his brain. The procedure meant many of his physical symptoms practically vanished.

He is still able to drive his boat – but is worried about being able to sing for much longer. And hits not yet released may never be heard by fans.

The star, whose hits included Scoundrel Days, Summer Moved On and Stay On These Roads, said: “The problems with my voice are one of many grounds for uncertainty about my creative future.”

He added: “I don’t feel like singing, and for me that’s a sign.

“I’m broadminded in terms of what I think works; I don’t expect to be able to achieve full technical control.

“The question is whether I can express myself with my voice. As things stand now, that’s out of the question. But I don’t know whether I’ll be able to manage it at some point in the future.”

Looking forward he bravely said: “I was always meant to do different things, but I’ve ended up with a fairly permanent position as singer in a band.

“When I say that my identity isn’t about being a singer, that’s my direct response. It comes straight from the heart.

“People associate me with it, naturally enough, and I realize that. I see singing as my responsibility, and at certain moments I think it’s absolutely fantastic that I get to do it.

“But I’ve got other passions too, I have other things that are just as big a part of me, that are just as necessary and true.”

The star told fans: “Don’t worry about me. Find out who you want to be – a process that can be new each and every day.

Everything you need to know about Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition, meaning that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time.

It affects around 153,000 people in the UK.

People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working.

This can cause a range of more than 40 symptoms, but the three main ones are:

  1. Tremor (shaking)
  2. Slow movement
  3. Rigidity (muscle stiffness)

Other common signs include:

  • Mild memory and thinking problems
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Issues with balance
  • Pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Shuffling walk with very small steps
  • Difficulty making facial expressions
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Problems peeing
  • Constipation

The four main ways of managing Parkinson’s include medication, staying active, exploring occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy, and monitoring symptoms.

“Be good servants of nature, the very basis of our existence, and care for the environment while it is still possible to do so. Spend your energy and effort addressing real problems, and know that I am being taken care of.

“For a few years now I’ve been working on songs that I’ve got great belief in, and I feel the lyrics, especially, have something of a different aspect of me in them.

“I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish them for release. Time will tell if they make it.

“I really like the idea of just going for it, as a Parkinson’s patient and an artist, with something completely outside the box.

“It’s all up to me, I just have to get this out of the way first.”

Clint Eastwood blasts Hollywood in bombshell interview… that he NEVER gave: Star slams Austrian paper over ‘phoney’ Q&A

CLINT Eastwood has hit out at an Austrian newspaper for publishing a bombshell interview he claims he never even gave.

The 95-year-old acting icon was directly quoted bashing Hollywood in the article – despite him now labelling the Q&A as “phoney”.

The supposed interview was published in Kurier, a Vienna-based paper with around 100,000 readers[/caption]

Despite his age meaning his career on the big screen has all but finished, Eastwood’s name was brought up again after his comments on the state of the film industry went viral.

Kurier, a Vienna-based paper with around 100,000 readers, published a major Q&A spread with the Dirty Harry star on Friday.

The main takeaway from the supposed interview was just how much Eastwood despised how reliant Hollywood has become on sequels and franchises.

One of Eastwood’s responses to a journalist’s question said: “I long for the good old days when screenwriters wrote movies like Casablanca in small bungalows on the studio lot.

“When everyone had a new idea.

“We live in an era of remakes and franchises. I’ve shot sequels three times, but I haven’t been interested in that for a long while.

“My philosophy is: do something new or stay at home.”

The answer stirred up days of debates from film buffs who argued both sides of the fence.

But Eastwood soon chimed in on the argument himself as he blasted the original interview as “entirely phony”.

He claims he has never given those comments to Kurier and hasn’t been interviewed by anyone in the past few weeks.

The paper’s editor has since conceded the quotes were in fact not from a formal interview with Eastwood who turned 95 last month.

Instead, they were repackaged by a writer who had spoken to the actor at more than a dozen media events in the past.

Elisabeth Sereda, a US-based Austrian journalist, had “convincingly explained” to editor Martin Gebhart that her and Eastwood have met on 18 occasions at round table media events.

This meant the quotes were a compilation of statements made by the actor over the years.

But Gebhart did admit that the way the article was presented as a tell-it-all exclusive chat went against his quality standards.

He then said he will no longer work with the Sereda as of a result.

The story has also since been withdrawn from the paper’s website entirely.

Gebhart said: “Even though no quotes were fabricated, the interviews are documented, and the accusation of fabrication can be refuted, we will no longer work with the author in the future.”

Michael Schumacher fake AI interview torment

MICHAEL Schumacher’s family were paid £170,000 in compensation after a magazine published a fake AI-generated interview with the F1 racing legend.

German publication Die Aktuelle claimed last April to have secured a “world exclusive” with the severely injured Ferrari great – who has not been seen in public since his 2013 skiing accident.

In a two-page spread, promoted with a picture of Schumacher, it claimed the seven-time F1 champ had said “My life has totally changed”.

It promised it was not a story based on “half-sentences from friends” but it’s “the incredible interview” with the F1 star with “redeeming answers to the most burning questions that the whole world has been asking for so long.”

The rest of the article was written in Q&A form, with an AI chatbot designed to mimic celebrities making up the answers Michael would supposedly give.

The bot even spoke about the racing hero’s physical condition, family and future recovery prospects.

Die Aktuelle only admitted the quotes, which used graphic details to describe his injuries, were written by a chatbot in a note on the inside pages.

The shameless interview just goes to show how “poisoned” bots can be weaponised, an expert warned.

Sereda is known for publishing celebrity based articles for Kurier and other Austrian media.

She is also a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and listed as a voting member on the website of the Golden Globes.

After Eastwood’s admission, Jude Law’s team also made similar comments on Sereda’s work.

She had published an interview claiming to be from the English actor earlier this year.

Sources close to Law said no interview has ever taken place and that the only time those direct quotes would have been made would have been at a press conference at the Toronto international film festival last year.

Eastwood is still working as a director with his most recent movie being Juror #2 which was released in November last year.

He has long been an influential figure in Hollywood for bis longevity and ability.

Since breaking through with the 1964 film of A Fistful of Dollars, Eastwood has continued as a leading man for decades.

He has even received the ultimate honour as a director through two Academy Award’s for best director with 1992’s Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby in 2005.

Celebrity Big Brother star Fern looked happy and relaxed as she hit the roads of the quaint Cornish village where she lives.

The fit star was seen running with ease, and showing off her slimmed down figure.

Fern looked in great shape, as she jogged along the idyllic country roads.

She was dressed the part in yoga pants, tracksuit top and trainers.

Fern’s workout clothes showed off her incredible five stone weight loss, which she has achieved through healthy eating and exercise.

TIME FOR CHANGE

Ferne revealed her incredible weight loss a few weeks ago.

She said that she had been on a health kick for 18-months.

Ferne told fans how she had quit booze and smoking, plus had cut sugar out from her diet by 80 percent, in a bid to lose the weight naturally.

Speaking to Woman&Home magazine in May, the popular presenter said: “I’m just two years off 70 so it’s very real. I can’t believe it, actually!

“At times, I get more tired than I used to or when I’m working in the garden, I think, ‘That’s heavy’.”

Ferne said of her children: “I don’t want them to feel guilty about not seeing me or worried about me if I’m not well.

“It’s important that I show them I’m living my own life well.”

Fern also revealed how a shoulder replacement kick-started her need to get her eating under control.

“I told myself, ‘I need to stop smoking, stop drinking, get eating under control and stop lying in bed feeling sorry for myself'”, she added.

Mystery as Love Islander unfollows co-star girlfriend and likes sexy pic of another star weeks after denying split

A LOVE Island star has unfollowed his girlfriend on social media, and liked another star’s sexy bikini snap, weeks after denying their split.

Ronnie Vint and Harriett Blackmore appear to be no longer following each other on Instagram, despite being on holiday together in Ibiza currently.

The unfollows came after fans recently spotted that footballer Ronnie, 28, had deleted photos of Harriett, 25, from Instagram – sparking fears they had separated.

But Ronnie took to his Instagram story to deny that they were on the rocks at the time, and said posts about the break-up were fake.

Now, in a new twist, they’ve unfollowed each other, and Ronnie has also liked a sexy bikini snap of another Instagram girl.

Tyne-Lexy Clarson, who rose to fame on Love Island’s third season, was seen lounging on a sun bed in Dubai in a white bikini, in a photo posted yesterday.

Ronnie has given the sexy snap a like, despite not following the blonde beauty on social media.

The Sun has contacted Ronnie and Harriett’s representatives for comment.

It comes after Ronnie denied he and Harriett had split, after a screengrab from an Instagram page claimed that they had.

The post appeared to show Ronnie commenting: “Yeah it’s true. Will explain my side of things later,” along with the caption: “Ronnie Vint is sharing his side of that story with what happened with Harriett.”

But Ronnie insisted that was simply a cruel hoax by a social media user.

He wrote: “This is clearly a set up. Edited because we are sweet and I haven’t commented a thing. Thank you.”

Just a day before, Ronnie and Harriett posted a since-deleted story around the same time, saying “LOOOOL”, with a black background.

One fan wrote on Reddit wrote at the time: “Harriet and Ronnie broke up??

“Ronnie posted this on his IG story and deleted the movie premiere photo with Harriett.”

Another added: “This is not the first time he has done cryptic stories and archive and unarchived posts with her.

2015 – Despite poor Jess Hayes being Max Morley’s second choice on the show, they did win – but they didn’t last as a couple. STATUS: Broken up.

“Why make it obvious on socials? Just fight in private.

“I highly think their relationship will end on very bad terms with how clear it gets that it’s so unhealthy.”

A third shared: “Both wiped each other from their IG. How people do that so quick is beyond me.”

However, the photos in question were then back and restored on Instagram.

Since that speculation online, Harriett posted Instagram snaps of the pair enjoying a sunny holiday in Dubai, and captioned them: “Dreamiest week”.

They’ve also been enjoying time together in Ibiza recently, but have unfollowed each other while away.

It comes as the villa duo’s plans to move in together were recently revealed.

Harriett opened up to The Mirror, saying: “In June. Everything’s happening at once.

“We’re moving up towards London, which is exciting.

“It’s really close to Matilda [Draper], so we’ll be spending a lot of time with her and going back and forth.”

Last summer, the pair had originally split just weeks after previously leaving the villa.

However, viewers watched as Harriet and Ronnie rekindled their connection on Love Island: All Stars.

Although Ronnie was an original All Stars islander, his then-ex entered as a bombshell on Day 11.Having reunited, the pair fell short of winning after being “dumped” on Day 34 of 36.

High street chain with over 500 locations shuts long-standing branch and launches huge closing down sale

A POPULAR high street chain with more than 500 locations is shutting one of its branches — and everything inside must go.

The Works in Acocks Green, Birmingham, which has been a familiar face on Warwick Road for over 20 years, is holding a huge closing down sale, with posters in the window reading: “Sorry, we are closing! Everything must go.”

The works in birmingham - Popular shop closing on Birmingham high street and 'everything must go', The stationery shop, which has been a feature of the Warwick Road high street for more than 20 years, is holding an 'everything must go' closing down sale
The closure follows several other big-name exits from the area, including Costa Coffee, which shut earlier this year

The stationery and books chain sits between Peacocks and New Image opticians but now appears to be preparing to vacate the unit.

The closure follows several other big-name exits from the area, including Costa Coffee, which shut earlier this year.

A spokesperson for The Works said: “We are currently in negotiations with our landlord regarding our store in Acocks Green and would like to reassure customers that we’re doing all we can to retain a presence in the town.”

Locals have taken to social media to share their disappointment, calling the once-thriving centre “finished”.

One anonymous resident wrote: “Can remember years ago you could spend hours mooching around all the shops they had… now all we have is barbers and nail bars. Such a shame.”

Ann Kain added: “One of the few decent shops left in The Green. What a dump now.”

The closing down sale has seen prices slashed, with many items now going for less than half their usual price as the store clears its shelves.

It comes as the high street faces mounting pressure across the UK, with more well-known names either cutting down locations or disappearing entirely.

The Original Factory Shop is preparing to shut ten shops, including nine set to close this month.

The firm previously warned some locations were no longer sustainable.

Poundland is also closing its Surrey Quays branch in London this week, with a further 200 stores reportedly at risk.

A final decision on the sale of the chain is expected in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, long-running department store Daniel of Ealing will shut its doors for good on June 8 after 120 years in business.

It has launched a massive clearance sale to mark the closure.

Iceland will also shut its College Square, Margate branch on June 21, though the supermarket has not confirmed the exact reason.

Staff will be offered other roles within the business.

Ginger, a family-run clothing store operating since the 1970s, will close for good on June 7 after nearly five decades on the high street.

With more shops closing and fewer new businesses moving in, many local centres like Acocks Green are struggling to maintain footfall and retain a mix of useful shops.

Why are retailers closing shops?

EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre’s decline.

The Sun’s business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.

In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.

Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open.

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs from April 2025, will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

At the same time, the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour from April, and the minimum wage for people aged 18-20 will rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40.

In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.

The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.

Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.

Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.

In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Carpetright, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins, Paperchase, Ted Baker, The Body Shop, Topshop and Wilko to name a few.

What’s increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.

They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.
