Viktor Gyokeres agent unhappy with transfer ‘mess’ involving Manchester United and Arsenal

Viktor Gyokeres’ representative has accused Sporting CP of creating a ‘mess’ by offering Manchester United the chance to sign the striker ahead of Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side finally completed their £64 million deal to sign the 27-year-old last weekend following several weeks of negotiations with the Portuguese champions.

Sporting fined Gyokeres €350,000 (£306,000), his entire salary for July, over his refusal to report back for pre-season training earlier this month.

Sporting had also been angered by suggestions from Gyokeres’ agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, that an agreement had been reached over the striker’s transfer fee before the start of the summer window.

However, Jonathan Chalkias, who works alongside Cetinkaya to manage Gyokeres, claims Arsenal were always the first-choice destination, despite Sporting’s attempts to attract interest from rival clubs.

‘It was a mess,’ Chalkias told Swedish network WTV.

‘There was a gentleman’s agreement with the previous sporting director. If Hugo Viana were still at Sporting, the deal would have been done in an hour.

‘Everything was written, we didn’t have time to start a legal battle.

‘I don’t understand how a player who scored so many goals and won three trophies didn’t deserve more respect. The sacrifices we made were the turning point for the deal to happen.

‘They offered Gyokeres to Real Madrid, they even made headlines with Man United, but there was a commitment with Arsenal.

‘Viktor always trusted Hasan Cetinkaya’s [the striker’s agent] project: they agreed to move to a league with less exposure, like the Portuguese, to win titles and return to the Premier League. At the time, there were already seven Premier League clubs interested.’

In a separate interview to WTV, Gyokeres admits his transfer to Arsenal this summer ‘wasn’t an easy path’.

‘Everyone had to make some sacrifices to get here,’ the striker said.

‘It wasn’t an easy path, but I think sometimes that’s what it takes to get to the top.

‘There were ups and downs, and the last month was very difficult. There was a lot of talk in the press and on social media, but people don’t really know what really happened. It was mentally tough to go through that, but these things also make us stronger.

‘I don’t need to blame anyone, or to say what others did or what decisions they made. I don’t gain anything from that, even though it seems like some people enjoy telling others how to behave. I don’t need to do that.’

When asked about the options he had this summer, Gyokeres replied: ‘There were some clubs in England and Italy, but also in the Middle East. There were some options, very good options.

‘Of course, you think about what you have in front of you. You have to make a decision, but from the first second I felt that this [Arsenal] was what I wanted. It wasn’t a difficult decision.’

Matheus Cunha has missed Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian forward, who was signed in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves last month, has featured in both of United’s pre-season friendlies this month.

However, the 26-year-old was not included in Ruben Amorim’s matchday squad for their game against Bournemouth at Soldier Field in Chicago due to concerns over fatigue.

‘We need to assess all the players and have to be careful with everyone,’ Amorim said before kick-off.

‘He’s available for the next one. Mateus felt a little bit fatigued. He was ready to play, he wants to give everything but we need to be careful.’

Chelsea sent message by Manchester United over Alejandro Garnacho transfer

Postseason Friendly - Manchester United v Hong Kong

Manchester United have ruled out the possibility of a swap deal with Chelsea involving Alejandro Garnacho and Nicolas Jackson, according to reports.

United are in the market to sign a new striker before the end of the transfer window and have now made RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko their top target.

Jackson, who has scored 30 goals in 81 appearances for Chelsea since his £32 million move from Villarreal two years ago, has also been considered an option by United.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have retained their interest in signing Garnacho after making an approach in the January transfer window.

A potential swap deal involving Jackson and Garnacho has been raised this summer, however, The Telegraph report that United insiders are ‘discounting’ a move for the Chelsea striker.

Chelsea are said to be demanding at least £80m for Jackson – a valuation which United believe is ‘excessive’.

Garnacho, meanwhile, wants to leave United but is keen to remain in the Premier League and join a Champions League club.

The Argentina international, who fell out with Ruben Amorim at the end of last season, has been left out of United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

But despite his omission from the first-team squad this summer, Amorim claims there could be a way back for Garnacho at United if he is not sold.

‘We are just allowing these players time to think and to decide,’ Amorim said last week.

‘If they reach a point where they have to join the team they will join the team because they are our players.

‘I know for a fact Omar [Berrada] and Jason [Wilcox] and the club have a number for these players. If they don’t reach that they will be Manchester United players, no doubts about that.

‘I understand the club are maybe waiting for the last minute but they can have a surprise and I am ready, I am ready to receive the players.

‘They have more competition, if they want to play in the World Cup they need to play so I’m really happy with that because I will have more options.

‘If they have to fight each other to play for me that is perfect.’
