Cleverley, 35, was available after he was sacked from his job at Watford due to missing out on the Championship playoffs.

He has signed a three-year contract with the Pilgrims and will be aiming to get the club back into the second flight.

Chairman Simon Hallett has hailed Cleverley’s arrival in the dugout following the controversial exit of Miron Muslic.

He said: “Ever since Miron’s departure, and knowing Tom was available, we identified him straight away as the perfect person to be our next head coach and targeted him immediately.

“When we spoke to him he was completely aligned with the vision and ambitions of the club and it was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us.

“He is fully invested in our long-term plans and will play a key role in helping us achieve them.

“He is young, passionate and did a great job at Watford.

“We are thrilled to bring him to Argyle and look forward to seeing the impact he has on the talented squad at his disposal.”

Despite an upturn in form, the club fell short of survival by just three points as they finished 23rd.

The club had hoped that Muslic would remain in his position for the next season but he left for 2. Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.

His exit was confirmed by Argyle on social media with a blunt 13-word statement.

It read: “Miron Muslic has left Argyle to join 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04.”

Hallett had even claimed that Muslic had told him he was “100 per cent committed” to the club before wanting to speak to Schalke.

His predecessor, Rooney, endured a torrid time in terms of results during his tenure.

He mustered just 18 points from 23 games and was sacked in December with the club rock bottom in the table.

Meanwhile, Cleverley has enjoyed a positive time since becoming a manager.

Watford had been his one and only job, but he did guide the club away from danger to a 15th-place finish in the 2023/24 season.

He then led the club to 14th last term, but only 11 points off the top six.

I’m a single mum & I’ll save £9k by transforming my garden into a modern dream – I’ve even built a shed & laid turf

IT’S no secret doing up your garden can cost an absolute fortune, especially if you fork out for the pros.

But one single mum has showed how she took her garden from dark and dingy to a modern dream – and saved £9k in the process.

Holly even built a shed and laid paving in her garden[/caption]

Holly Metcalf took to TikTok to show off the epic transformation, and fellow DIY fans have been left stunned by her hard work.

Her decision to take on the mammoth task herself came after she was quoted a whopping £10k to have her garden renovated professionally.

With a strict budget of £1k, the single mum managed to build a shed, and even spent time digging up the existing dead grass to lay fresh turf.

“I didn’t realise quite how back breaking this was going to be, but never mind, I think I’ve burned some extra calories while doing it,” Holly said in one of the viral videos.

As well as building then painting a shed, Holly also laid paving and painted the existing fences.

Laying the turf turned out to be one of her toughest jobs yet though, since the delivery couldn’t get close to her house and her neighbour had to help move it.

But after the turf was finally laid, the busy mum explained she still had lots to do.

Some of the uneven pavers needed to be moved so she can level out the ground before putting them back in place.

The patio also still needed some work, as mum said she planned to de-weed it before pressure washing and finally painting it.

Then, she revealed, it will be time for some new garden furniture to complete her huge project.

After showing off her transformation so far, fellow DIY fans were amazed by how far it’s come along.

One said: “It will be so satisfying seeing what you’ve achieved, it’s so great you’re doing it yourself and like you said, good for your body too – win win!”

“Garden renovation is a process, it will be fine and it’ll look fab,” a second encouraged the mum.

“You’re doing an amazing work,” someone else chimed in.

Meanwhile, others offered some advice to the hardworking mum when it came to laying turf.

“Turf should be staggered like bricklaying, you’re doing a great job,” one said.

And another agreed: “Best way to lay turf is to slightly overlap it and don’t walk on it for at least four weeks.”

Gardening mistakes that could get you fined

Gardening experts over at Toolstation have revealed the garden laws you need to be aware of not breaking.

While some of these laws could land you with a fine of up to £20,000 in extreme cases, a friendly chat with your neighbours can usually resolve any issues.

Tree removal and pruning: If you have a tree in your garden you want to get rid of you better think twice and do your research.

The gardening experts reveal: “If one neighbour wishes to remove or heavily prune a tree that the other neighbour values, disputes can arise over the impact on the view, shade, or privacy. “

While it might cause a row, if it is in your property boundary it is ultimately your choice, unless it has a Tree Protection Order on it.

“But, some trees may be protected by a Tree Protection Order which makes it an offence to uproot, top or destroy them, the experts warn.

The maximum fine for breaking this law is £20,000, so make sure you double check if it does have a TPO.

You can find out by contacting your local council for a map that shows this information. Alternatively, you can ask to speak with your local tree officer.

Property boundaries and fences: One of the main causes of neighbours falling out is through arguing over property boundaries and fencing.

To avoid this situation, the gardening pros recommend checking the deeds of your property to determine the correct boundaries

“Most of the time, it’s easy to determine who owns the fence as the fence posts will usually be on the owners side,” they add.

“Additionally, the height of fences or hedges can cause disputes between neighbours if one party feels the height has exceeded the two metre guidance.

“Hedges and fences should be no more than two metres high, and you could be asked by the council to take them down if a neighbour complains about the height.

“Luckily, standard fence sizes are less than two metres tall so you shouldn’t have a problem.”

Garden structures and additions: A pergola is the perfect addition to a garden if you want somewhere to relax in the shade.

But if it obstructs your neighbour’s view or violates local building regulations it could cause a dispute, as can sheds and other garden structures.

“If you’re not sure, have a chat with your neighbours to let them know what you’re planning and, if there’s an issue, get in touch with your local council who can give you more guidance,” advise the gardening experts.

Overhanging branches and plants: “When branches, vines, or roots from one neighbour’s tree or plant extend into the neighbouring property, it can lead to disagreements over potential damage to structures, blocked views, or the burden of maintenance,” reveal the pros.

However, it’s important to note you can only trim overhanging branches up to the boundary of your property otherwise, it could be seen as trespassing.

You can climb into the tree to carry out the work if needed, but only on your property and make sure to stay on your side of the fence if you don’t have permission to enter your neighbours garden.

Top gardening trends of 2025

Gardening experts at Barnsdale Gardens has shared the top gardening trends of 2025.

Matrix planting

It seems that a top planting trend for this year is going to be Matrix Planting.

In essence, planting in groups or blocks to give an effect of being wild whilst actually being carefully managed.

Selection of the plants is essential, to give year-round interest either with flowers, seed heads or frosted/snowy spent flower heads. Some recommend using plants that seed around, but this could make managing your matrix planting harder to keep under control.

Chrysanthemum comeback

I hope that the humble Chrysanthemum makes as much of a comeback this year as Dahlias have over recent years, because the simple single flowered types, such as ‘Innocence’ and ‘Cottage Apricot’ would be spectacular within a matrix scheme.

The hardy varieties are so easy to grow in a sunny spot and give such a valuable burst of late summer and autumn colour that would lift any dull- looking border.

Blended borders

For some time now we have been promoting the growing of veg within ornamental borders and I think this could really take off this year.

The choice of ornamental-looking varieties available in seed catalogues is phenomenal and, if managed correctly, visitors to your garden will not even realise that you have veg growing!

Must-have tool

My secret is out. I discovered the Hori Hori a couple of years ago and now it seems so is everyone else.

It is such a well-made, adaptable tool that can be used as a trowel or weeding tool in the garden that and everyone I speak to who have used it absolutely would not now be without it. Enough said!

Katie Price takes swipe at daughter Princess’s driving – despite SIX road bans

KATIE Price has given her verdict on her daughter Princess’ driving skills.

Princess, 17,  passed her test last month and splashed out on a brand new Audi A1 in white, which is likely to have set her back at least £10,000.

She has been making the most of her new found freedom – and even went to watch her mum perform on stage.

But Katie – who has famously been banned from driving six times in the last ten years after a series of infringements – wasn’t impressed with her lack of speed.

Chatting to sister Sophie on her podcast The Katie Price Show, the mum-of-five explained: “Oh,yeah. Princess came. She started following us and I’m like, Princess,I’m going to be late because she was going under the speed limit.

“Obviously, because she’s new and it’s the roads and  it was raining and I didn’t want to stress her out, so I gave her the postcode.I said ‘look, we’ll see you there’.”

Sophie was keen to know more about her driving and if she was driving at night yet.

Katie added:  “Yeah, she drives to see me. And then I met her at Westfields on Sunday because she goes away today. She goes to lbiza.”

When Princess first passed her test, Katie congratulated her writing: ” So proud and so scared at the same time.”

After revealing her new car, Princess was hit with criticism by fans, who believe it was actually mum and dad Katie and Peter Andre who actually forked out the cash for it.

But Princess  put that speculation to bed, hitting back at the comments and declaring: “These comments are so funny. To everyone out there, yes I work and yes I earn my own money which I’m super proud of and so thankful that I’m lucky enough to buy my own car xx.”

Becoming an influencer in her own right, Princess has already signed brand ambassador deals with high street beauty chain Superdrug and online retailer PrettyLittleThing, and has launched her own jewellery range.

She’s also vowed to be a millionaire by the time she turns 20.

Her mum Katie was banned from driving for two years in December 2021 after crashing her BMW in a drink-driving smash in Horsham.

She had been meant to get her licence back in later 2023, but it was delayed by almost another year.

This was after Katie was charged in early 2024 with driving without insurance and a valid licence.

Meghan and Harry brutally AXE host of key aides yet again after blaming them for string of PR humiliations

THE Duke and Duchess of Sussex have given their communications team the boot after blaming them for a series of PR humiliations.

Harry and wife Meghan decided instead to go with the firm behind their controversial twerking video — sparking fears of a “clickbait” approach which will horrify the Royal Family.

Last night a source told The Sun: “Meghan and Harry always blame everyone else and never themselves.

“No one ever seems to be good enough for them and yet they fail to understand why things don’t change.”

This year’s embarrassments included January’s take-down of Meghan in society bible Vanity. It reignited bullying allegations and was headlined “American Hustle”.

In February experts described as chaotic the rebranding of Meghan’s “American Riviera Orchard” food brand into “As ever”.

Her six-part Netflix cookery and lifesyle show was savaged by TV reviewers in both the UK and USA, while her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder” quickly tumbled down the ratings.

Meghan, 43, was also caught out calling herself “Her Royal Highness” in a potential breach of the 2020 Megxit agreement struck with the late Queen.

The Sussexes responded by firing two directors of communications in what insiders described as a purge. UK-based Charlie Gipson went along with California-based Kyle Boulia.

Deesha Tank, who worked for the couple’s Archewell foundation for three years, had resigned days earlier. Meanwhile the head of content for Meghan’s Instagram account also left.

Several weeks ago the couple hired Emily Robinson as a new director of communications — despite her previously running ublicity for The Crown episodes which showed Harry in Nazi fancy dress and sympathetic storylines on depraved sex offender Mohammed Al-Fayed.

Harry and Meghan have now brought in Method Communications, who claim they are “disruptors” who “challenge the status quo”.

It is understood one of their first acts was releasing the video of heavily pregnant Meghan dancing in a maternity as she tried to induce Lilibet’s birth.

The clip was widely panned but pulled in 42million views.

Photos of Lilibet and six-year-old brother Archie, with their faces covered by emjois, were then posted online showing the kids in Disneyland.

Their chief communications officer remains Meredith Maines, appointed in March days before Harry scuppered any hope of a reconciliation with King Charles in an angry interview with the BBC.

Ms Maines said last night: “Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access.”

Emma Raducanu gets treatment for back injury in worrying scenes as she crashes out of Queen’s 17 days before Wimbledon

EMMA RADUCANU took a medical timeout and struggled with a niggling back injury as she crashed out of the Queen’s tournament.

Seventeen days before Wimbledon opens its doors for the 2025 Championships, the biggest name in British tennis is once again having to manage her body amid physical problems.

She was beaten by Qinwen Zheng[/caption]

After losing the first set of her quarter-final tie with Qinwen Zheng, on the hottest day of the year thus far, the Kent hitter went to the changing rooms to undergo treatment.

It all relates to back spasms she suffered before the French Open and prior to arriving in Paris, the 22-year-old had to overcome her fear of needles to undergo acupuncture to help cure the pain.

It was on these grounds nearly 12 months ago that Andy Murray injured his back and ended up never playing another singles match.

It is not as severe as that but still, those in Raducanu’s camp will be praying this incident does not disrupt her plans as she hopes to play in Berlin next week and then Eastbourne before a fourth appearance in the Wimbledon main draw.

Zheng, the world No.5, won 6-2 6-4 in a drawn-out affair and will now face an American in the semi-finals – it will either be Emma Navarro or Amanda Anisimova on Saturday.

Before walking out into the Andy Murray Arena, Raducanu made a point of taking AirPods out of her ears and putting them away, presumably because she wanted to hear the roar of the public for her entrance.

How Zheng would cope mentally with a packed crowd cheering against her would play a significant role in the outcome of this contest.

The Olympic singles champion, 22, was not exactly in the fans’ good books when she decided in game six, while on break point on Raducanu’s serve, to change her shoes.

The Asian star slipped on the grass and told the umpire that she needed to swap her footwear.

Pimm’s-fuelled punters were not having any of it and slow-clapped while she sat on her chair and booed when she returned to the baseline, even though Zheng apologised several times for the interruption.

Illustration of Wimbledon singles prize money for 2024 and 2025.

Raducanu was unconvincing on her own serve and looked tense and nervous in the opening games and was even questioning some of the calls made by the new electric line calling system.

There were two chances, at 4-2 down in the first set, where she might have broken back immediately but Zheng, a huge star in her homeland, fought off those moments.

Zheng – who had only won FOUR matches on grass before facing the 2021 US Open champion – sealed the first set with 49 minutes on the clock.

It was in bizarre circumstances as she was on the floor, having slipped over again, but Raducanu failed to find the open court, hitting the ball into the net.

A set down, Raducanu went backstage and took a medical timeout as she had treatment on a troublesome lower back region.

During the first set, she could be seen stretching her back during a changeover.

These were worrying scenes but unfortunately a situation that has become all too familiar with Raducanu since that historic Slam win in New York in September 2021.

Perhaps a surge of adrenaline explains how she came out looking like a different player in the second set, racing into a 3-0 and then 4-2 lead, the first break in game one courtesy of a Zheng double fault.

But with the temperature gauge recording 27.5 degrees, Raducanu felt the heat and soon it was 4-4 apiece as she gifted a break to her opponent due to her sixth of seven double faults in the match.

Though she managed to stave off three match points in game 10, Zheng progressed when Raducanu’s forehand sailed long.

‘A lot are saying the same thing’ – Darts stars moan about World Cup outfits causing awkward wardrobe malfunctions

FURIOUS darts star Gian van Veen has revealed that players are outraged with the quality of T-shirts given out at the World Cup.

The world No. 23 insisted most of his rivals agree with his view that the tops dished out ahead of the tournament are too tight.

Gian van Veen says several players have made the same complaint as him at the World Cup

Van Veen is part of the Dutch team in Germany, lining up alongside Danny Noppert, who is ranked 16th in the world.

After thumping Italy 4-0 on Friday, the Netherlands duo face Hungary next and are widely expected to reach the knockout phase.

But Van Veen has been left infuriated with the shirts given out to players at World Cup, arguing that the tops aren’t big enough.

He said: “I asked for an XL, but this feels more like a medium. An XXL would’ve been better.

“It’s tight, uncomfortable, and feels totally different from my usual shirt. A lot of players are saying the same thing.

“I’ve spoken to the PDC about it and they’ve promised to look into it for next year. But for now, we’ll just have to get on with it.”

The World Cup shirts were made by professional sport’s apparel supplier Fourex and feature bespoke designs for each country.

Van Veen, who replaced Dutch ace Michael van Gerwen after he withdrew, then revealed that the team “feel confident” but “expected more from the Italians”.

England duo Luke Littler and Luke Humphries are not in action until Saturday.

As the best-ranked team, they received a bye into the knockout rounds.

The world champion and world No. 1 Humphries are strong favourites to win the tournament.

Humphries won the World Cup with Michael Smith last year, when they beat Austrian pair Rowby-John Rodriguez and Mensur Suljovic 10-6.

If England win this Sunday, they will extend their record of World Cup titles to six.

While, the Dutch pairing decided that Van Veen would throw first this weekend, it looks like Littler will do the same in his duo.

Arsenal hold initial talks to sign Brazil star Alexsandro

Arsenal have made an initial approach for Lille centre-back Alexsandro, according to reports in Brazil.

The 25-year-old has one of the standout defenders in Ligue 1 this season and was rewarded with his first senior call-up for Brazil’s national side by Carlo Ancelotti last month.

Alexsandro continued his impressive form for Brazil as he delivered two solid performances in the goalless draw against Ecuador last week and in the 1-0 win against Paraguay on Tuesday night.

According to UOL, Arsenal had scouts in the stands at the Neo Quimica Arena on Tuesday to watch Alexsandro and have made ‘initial contact’ for the defender.

The report adds that Serie A champions Napoli have also made an approach for the Brazilian.

Speaking about his future this week, Alexsandro said: ‘It depends on [Lille] president [Olivier] Letang. You’d have to ask him.

‘I am calm and not in any rush to leave. He will decide my future.’

In an interview at the end of the season after Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 to secure a place in the Europa League, Alexsandro made it clear how much he has been helped by Lille head coach Bruno Genesio.

‘He helps me a lot off the pitch too. We talk a lot together. He tries to understand me,’ Alexsandro told BeFootball.

‘That’s something that helps me a lot on the pitch. He talks to every player, every week. Whether there’s a need or not, he comes and talks with you. If he feels like he sees you a little sad, he also comes and tries to understand what’s going on.

‘I love him very much and I wish him many good things because he deserves it. He has a good heart. He is a great coach.

‘I hope that next year we can work together and that we can, once again, achieve great things.’

Alexsandro has had an unorthodox career path as he failed to secure a professional contract in Brazil and ended up joining Praiense, who were playing in the Portuguese third tier.

He then joined fellow Portuguese third-division side Amora for one season before he moved again to Chaves in the second division where he helped them gain promotion to the top flight.

Lille had seen enough and agreed a €2 million (£1.72m) deal with Chaves to sign Alexsandro in July 2022.

Tuesday night’s game for Brazil was the first time Alexsandro had played in a professional match in his home country.
