CDU attentive to councilor position, PS tries to avoid absolute majority of PSD in the Board

The National Elections Commission (CNE) confirmed to DN that in the local elections on October 12th (with early voting on October 5th) there were errors in ballot papers in Lisbon and Guarda, where the square was missing to mark Chega and CDU, respectively. These incidents keep some electoral results in suspense and can influence the distribution of mandates in strategic municipalities.

The impasses will hardly be resolved this Thursday, as was the plan, DN knows.

In Lisbon, 60 voters who resorted to early voting for the Parish Assembly of São Domingos de Benfica came across a bulletin that did not contain the box next to the name of the Chega party.

The PCP has, at this stage, delegates who seek to interpret reasons for possible null votes and this has, naturally, led to a longer process. At issue is the 11 vote difference that won the second councilor to Chega. In São Domingos de Benfica, the PCP had 433 more votes than André Ventura’s party, as such they believe in a possible turnaround, which would allow them to secure the second councilor.

Chega criticizes the action in a statement. “In practically all polling stations, PCP delegates requested the reanalysis of invalid votes which, in light of Article 57, no. 4 of the Electoral Law, were clear and unequivocal cases. Furthermore, the protests were not based on legal aspects”, Ana Simões Silva states in text, lamenting “the unjustifiable delay” and “abusive practice as a tool of obstruction.”

According to municipal sources heard by the CNN Portugalall completed ballots, including those referring to the Parish Council, the Municipal Assembly and the City Council, remained closed until the following Tuesday, when the general vote counting assemblies began. In other words, so far, none of these votes have been counted.
The candidacy of João Ferreira (CDU) admitted, on Tuesday, that he could request a recount of the votes.

After the general count, if the parties disagree with the results published in the notice, they can proceed with the challenge, which could lead to the vote being repeated. At this stage, it is a possible scenario because the PS also seeks to have more information about the bulletins. DN knows that the socialists, defeated by more than 2100 votes, could avoid an absolute majority in the parish with just over fifty votes.
