With the characteristic cry of “Azúcar!”, the Cuban singer Maydel García marked the beginning of an evening full of rhythm, energy and Caribbean flavor, in which she paid tribute to the unforgettable Celia Cruz, “The Queen of Salsa.” His powerful voice and charisma ignited the audience from the first notes and made the Armando Manzanero Theater vibrate.
The tribute, carried out as part of the Cultural Autumn program, brought together dozens of attendees who came to the theater early to ensure a good place. After 8 pm the third call was heard. The lights turned on to give way to the musicians, who opened the evening with the unmistakable notes of “Quimbara”, one of Celia Cruz’s classics.
A tracking light announced the entrance of Maydel García, who appeared on stage in a blue dress covered in sequins that reflected the lights. His presence impacted from the first moment. The singer, with contagious energy, filled the theater with her powerful voice and vibrant style, maintaining the rhythm and emotion throughout the entire presentation.
Throughout the concert, García showed closeness to the audience. Between songs he interacted with the audience, inviting them to participate: “I see you guys sitting very tight!” he exclaimed, laughing, causing the audience to respond immediately by standing up to dance to the rhythm of the salsa. Some followed the beat from their seats, moving their hands and feet, while others improvised steps between the rows of the theater, infected by the energy of the performer.
The repertoire was varied and balanced. The artist performed more melodic songs, such as “Tu Voz” and “Yerba Santa”, which aroused nostalgia and were sung with emotion, and songs full of flavor and rhythm such as “Que le den candela”, “Bemba colorá” and “Burundanga”, which ignited the spirits of the attendees.
The climax came with “La negra tiene tumbao”, one of Celia Cruz’s most representative songs, which unleashed general euphoria and brought the entire audience to their feet. Without decreasing the intensity, Maydel García continued with “You abused” before closing with “Guantanamera” and “Sobreviviré”, pieces that provoked a prolonged ovation and marked the end of the presentation.
The tribute, full of rhythm, joy and emotion, not only remembered the artistic strength of Celia Cruz, but also reaffirmed the validity of her musical legacy and her influence on new generations of performers. The voice and energy of Maydel García, added to the enthusiastic response of the public, made the night a celebration of salsa, the Caribbean and the eternal joy that the “Guarachera de Cuba” left in the history of music.— ILSE NOH CANCHÉ
