Challenges when charging e-cars: price transparency required

STUTTGART / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The price transparency at charging stations for electric cars has been criticized. Different tariffs and a lack of price information unsettle consumers and make it difficult to switch to electromobility. Baden-Württemberg’s transport minister is calling for more transparency and is planning an initiative to oblige providers to disclose their price data.

Electromobility faces numerous challenges, especially when it comes to the transparency of charging prices at public charging stations. Holger Bach from ADAC Württemberg recommends that e-car drivers carry several customer cards from different providers in order to be able to react flexibly to different tariffs. This practice highlights the complexity and lack of transparency of the current system, which differs significantly from fixed gasoline prices.

A central problem is the pricing at the charging stations. Unlike conventional gas stations, there is no uniform price per kilowatt hour. The costs vary depending on the provider, contract conditions and method of payment. Customers without a fixed contract often have to expect significant price increases, especially at motorway service stations. An ADAC study has shown that charging without a contract can be up to 62 percent more expensive.

Baden-Württemberg’s Transport Minister Winfried Hermann sharply criticizes this practice and describes the different prices as “usury”. He demands that the costs of charging electric vehicles must be visible at a glance, similar to refueling. In order to achieve this, the state of Baden-Württemberg plans to submit a proposal to the conference of transport ministers that will require providers to disclose their price data.

The EU AFIR regulation already requires that charging prices must be displayed on the columns. Nevertheless, providers have until the end of 2026 to implement these requirements. Hermann urges that prices should also be displayed in navigation apps to make planning easier for consumers. These measures are not only intended to increase transparency, but also to promote the switch to electromobility, which is still progressing slowly in Baden-Württemberg despite increasing new registrations.
