Channing Tatum is Toning Down Gambit’s Accent for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Ever since Deadpool and Wolverine, Channing Tatum has cemented himself in the MCU in the role of Gambit. Confirmed to star in Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum gives fans a sneak peek into what they can expect from his comic book character, especially when it comes to Gambit’s Cajun accent.

Since his introduction into the MCU, Gambit’s accent has been at the center of a running joke, seeing as it was so thick that it was hard to fully understand what he was saying. Tatum told Variety that the executives had to “really had to wrap their mind around the accent and how people are going to understand him” moving forward in the new franchise installment.

“I’m not gonna go full Cajun,” revealed Tatum. “[Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full ‘Deadpool.’ They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter.”

It seems that the Russo brothers want to put Gambit in a more serious light and elevate him as a real hero to take notice of. After all, it was reportedly revealed that Gambit will have a large role in Avengers: Doomsday, facing off against Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom.

Tatum previously revealed the Cajun accent came about with very little improv, as he grew up in Mississippi and his father being from New Orleans.

“There are certain little isms that are very Cajun-y, but we actually intended it to be somewhat unintelligible. That was sort of the joke,” said the actor.

It’s unclear how far into the new phase of the MCU Tatum’s character will go, with details of how his character becomes involved in the new movie under wraps. Fans can expect a lot of fight scenes from Tatum, who suffered an injury on set.

Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on December 18, 2026.
