These measures aim to better protect young people by restricting interaction with the chatbots for users under the age of 18. Starting November 25th, the time minors can spend with the chatbots will be limited to two hours per day. This decision comes in response to several lawsuits accusing the company of complicity in youth suicides.
The introduction of these restrictions comes amid a controversial debate in the US about the impact of AI on the mental health of young people. The families of several minors have reportedly filed lawsuits against Character Technologies in the states of Colorado and New York. They claim that use of Character.AI played a role in their children’s suicides or suicide attempts. These allegations have caused the company to critically examine the use of its services by young people and to take appropriate action.
In addition to the time restrictions, Character Technologies plans to introduce a new age verification system. This is intended to ensure that teenagers can continue to use the tool, but no longer for open chat conversations, but for other creative applications such as creating videos or streams. These measures are intended to prevent young people from being exposed to potentially harmful content that could occur in open chat formats despite existing filters.
