Various lots of pecorino cheese produced or packaged in New Jersey by The Ambriola Company and packaged in stores Wegmans Food Markets (in New York and other areas) are being recalled due to risk of contamination with Listeria.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported on the situation on its official site. The Ambriola Company initiated a recall of certain grated cheese products from brands such as Locatelli, Boar’s Head y Member’s Mark due to confirmation of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in routine tests.
The products were distributed to retail stores and distributors nationwide between the November 3, 2025 and November 20, 2025. Once the risks of possible contamination became known, the company suspended production and distribution at the West Caldwell, New Jersey, facility.
What are the specific affected products from The Ambriola Company?
The recommendation for consumers is to check the expiration dates (or “Expiration Dates” in the list below) of the products purchased:

2. Grated Products Sold by the Pound (Bulk)
- Locatelli Pecorino Romano Rallado:
- Expiration Dates: 03/04/26, 03/06/26, 03/11/26, 03/13/26.
- Ambriola Grated Pecorino Romano:
- Expiration Dates: 02/28/26, 03/04/26, 03/11/26.
- Grated Pinna Pecorino Romano:
- Expiration Date: 03/11/26.

- Expiration Dates: 03/03/26, 12/03/26.

For its part, Wegmans Food Markets announced a recall for Locatelli brand grated Pecorino Romano cheese due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. These products were sold with Wegmans scale (variable weight) labels.
- The products have the following characteristics:
- Packaged in a plastic container.
- Label: “Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese”.
- UPC code: 2-77580-XXXXX-7 (where “XXXXX” varies by weight).
- All lot codes have been recalled.
Where were they sold?
The FDA report indicates that the product was sold between November 14 and 24, 2025 at Wegmans stores 9 states and the District of Columbiaincluding: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, DC
Risks of infection Listeria
The reason behind these withdrawals (confirmed by routine testing) is the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause serious infections, known as listeriosis, with the following risks:
- High risk population: Serious, life-threatening infections in young children, elderly/frail people and those with weakened immune systems.
- Risk in pregnancy: It can cause spontaneous abortions and stillbirths in pregnant women.
Common symptoms are: high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. If you experience these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
To date, no illnesses have been reported. related to these recalls so far, but the action is an urgent precautionary measure.

If you have purchased any of the affected Ambriola Pecorino Romano cheese products (Locatelli, Boar’s Head, Member’s Mark, Pinna, Ambriola brands) or the Wegmans scale-labeled grated product, it is important to note:
- Avoid consuming it: Discard the product immediately or return it to the point of purchase.
- Request a refund: You may return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
