The small municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, is the municipality in the country with the highest percentage of immigrants in relation to the resident population: of the 5.9 thousand inhabitants registered in 2023, 2.5 thousand were foreigners, which corresponds to 43% of the total number of people living in that territory, where the town of Sagres is located. Despite being a pressured area, immigration does not appear to have been a central topic in the electoral campaign debates in local authorities: It is not easy to find references to the issue of immigrants in Facebook account of that Chega municipalityand these opinions are rare in independent candidate’s personal posts who ran for the party, Afonso Nascimento. This example contrasts with Chega’s speech in legislative elections, in which participants at dinners and rallies shout “not one more!”while applauding André Ventura.
