Chega will present two amendments to the Nationality Law to the plenary of the Assembly of the Republic, insisting on the automatic loss of nationality for those who commit serious crimes, and continues without revealing whether the party will make this law viable.
Speaking to journalists in parliament, the leader of Chega announced that the party will put a proposal to the plenary for consideration so that anyone convicted of serious crimes automatically loses their Portuguese nationality, but safeguarding that they do not become stateless, that is, only applying to situations in which the person has more than one nationality.
“To avoid any judgment of unconstitutionality, the result could never occur in a legal situation of statelessness of the target, that is, the person who committed the crime can never be in a stateless situation”, he explained.
The other proposal concerns the fraudulent obtaining of citizenship, so that it “can never be consolidated”. “In our legislation, if you have obtained nationality, even through a process that was fraudulent, after 10 years the situation is pacified in the legal order, that is, it is consolidated, regardless of the original sin, of the original moment. We understand that this cannot happen, because if it was obtained either in bad faith or fraudulently at the beginning, it makes no sense that after 10 years it is consolidated in the legal order”, defended André Ventura.

“It is more restrictive than we would like, it is only for cases in which, under the terms of the legislation, the existence of fraud is evident, but ultimately, it is possible in terms of approximation and in terms of negotiation”, he indicated.
André Ventura highlighted that these are “important points” for Chega and this is an “attempt to still save the Nationality Law”. He also refused that this was a retreat, maintaining that the party maintains “the essential principles”.
The president of Chega did not reveal how the party will vote, overall, on the revision of the Nationality Law. “I think we have to work, Enough, government and majority, so that we can have a Nationality Law. If this is not possible, it will be regrettable, but I want to have a clear conscience that I did everything possible to have a Nationality Law and that our deputies worked to the limit to have a Nationality Law“, he maintained.
Ventura said that negotiations will continue and that he believes that these proposals will be accepted by the PSD: “I think we have a path here for acceptance of either one or both proposals.”
“It is possible that changes will still be taking place, the regulations provide for changes until the start of voting. We will continue with negotiations for the rest of this evening, however, the two rules proposed for recall now are these, and the changes are in these terms”, he indicated.
Given the opposition already assumed by PS, Livre, BE and PCP, on Tuesday, in a final global vote, Chega will have to vote in favor alongside PSD, CDS and IL. Only in this way will a qualified majority of 116 votes in favor be reached among the 230 deputies currently in office.
The vote on the Nationality Law will take place on Tuesday, after the end of the discussion on the State Budget for 2026 in general.
