Chief of Staff dismisses Marcelo’s replacement “at this time”, candidates wish PR improvements

The head of the Civil House, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo, ruled out the possibility, “at this moment”, of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, being replaced in office for health reasons. In a statement to journalists, at around 10pm, at Hospital de São João, in Porto, where Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was admitted today for emergency surgery for an “incarcerated hernia”, the Chief of Staff said that the possibility of replacing the position “is not present at this time”.

“We are talking about an hour and a half of surgical intervention. I don’t think it is necessary to launch a process that is very cumbersome”, he said, when asked by journalists about a hypothetical replacement of functions by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, second figure in the State’s protocol hierarchy.

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, spoke to the President of the Republic before the surgery and is monitoring the evolution of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s health status, a source in his office told Lusa.

The PS and several presidential candidates have already wished a speedy recovery to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is undergoing surgery for an “incarcerated hernia”, at the Hospital de São João, in Porto.

In a note, the secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, expressed his hope that the surgery would take place safely and that the head of state would recover quickly.

“Having learned that the President of the Republic was affected by a sudden health problem and after contacting the Civil House, I hope that the surgical intervention to which he will be subjected takes place safely and restores his health to full health”, said José Luís Carneiro.

The leader of Chega and candidate for Belém, André Ventura, wrote on the social network X that he had just learned about the situation of the President of the Republic. “I hope for a quick recovery and a return with health and energy”, he wished.

The presidential candidate supported by BE Catarina Martins wrote on the same network: “I hope it’s nothing serious and that you recover quickly.”

João Cotrim Figueiredo, candidate for Belém supported by IL, wrote that he was “following closely the evolution of the health status of the President of the Republic”, to whom he wished a speedy improvement.

Candidates António José Seguro (supported by the PS) and Jorge Pinto (supported by Livre) heard the news when they were in a television debate on RTPalso wishing the head of state a quick recovery.
