Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has warned parents that children in Grade R will not be automatically placed in Grade 1 for 2026.
During a media briefing at Jeppe Girls High School in Johannesburg on Sunday, Chiloane said that all parents and guardians must follow the standard online admissions process, which opens on Thursday and closes on 29 August.
“You have to apply, you have to comply, you have to do everything that every parent will be doing to get their children admitted in our public schools. So if your child is in Grade R, you must apply,” said Chiloane.
Admissions: Step-by-step system and document verification
The 2026 admissions will use a five-step online application system. Chiloane emphasised the importance of uploading all required documents during the process. Applications missing any papers will be marked incomplete.
“Every step of the application process will be confirmed via SMS for security and verification purposes,” he explained.
“There will be weekly pop-up messages on the system and SMS notifications sent to registered applicants as reminders to complete their application.”
Additionally, Parents must upload certified documents within seven days of starting the application. Chiloane urged them to ensure that the information submitted matches what is entered into the system. He also advised families not to change cell phone numbers during this admission period, as SMS communication is essential for tracking and verifying applications.
No fees required, report fraud attempts
Chiloane issued a firm warning against scams involving placement payments. He also reminded the public that the admissions process is entirely free and that any requests for money should be reported immediately.
“This is free,” he said.
“If anyone says, ‘Give us money, and your child will be guaranteed placement,’ let us know, go to the nearest police station, and tell us who that official or person is. There is no money required.”
The department has urged parents to remain vigilant and contact officials if they experience difficulties or suspicious activity during the admissions application period.
