(EUROPA PRESS).- United States (EU) y China reached this Sunday a “principle of consensus” to ease tensions over fentanyl trafficking and shipping taxes after two days of extensive talks in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) during the Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Chinese negotiator Li Chenggang confirmed that both sides held “frank and constructive” talks on issues such as export control, the extension of the tariff truce, the expansion of bilateral trade and the role of China in the production of primary chemicals that end up indirectly used in fentanyl trafficking.
Li also described the talks as intense and the U.S. stance as firm, but praised progress there. Both sides will now report the outcome to their leaders ahead of Thursday’s summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
“What we don’t want to see are turbulence and unexpected turns like those that are happening,” Li declared in an appearance collected by the agency. Bloombergwhere he highlighted that a stable commercial and economic relationship between China and the United States benefits both countries and the rest of the world.
He Secretary of the TreasuryScott Bessent previously told reporters in Kuala Lumpur that the talks were “constructive, wide-ranging and in-depth,” and created a “very positive framework” for the leaders’ meeting.
Bessent, however, did not mention any agreement on new US port fees for Chinese vessels, which has become a new source of friction in relations.
The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Prime Minister He Lifeng and included Vice Minister of Finance Liao Min. Trade representative Jamieson Greer was also part of the American team.
The US President is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings in the coming days in Japan and South Korea, where he is also expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.
Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, expressed hope that talks with Xi would result in “a complete agreement.”
The meeting would be the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the two largest economies this year. Trump said direct talks are the best way to resolve issues such as tariffs, export restrictions, agricultural purchases, fentanyl trafficking, geopolitical flashpoints like Taiwan and the war in Ukraine.
“We will talk about many issues. I think we have a good chance of reaching a very complete agreement,” he said.
Among the possible topics on the agenda is US policy towards Taiwan. Xi has pressured Washington to officially declare that it opposes the independence of the autonomous democracy, a concession that would represent a major diplomatic victory for Beijing.
