The German industry is once again confronted with a growing chip shortage, which is particularly affecting manufacturers of electronic and optical products. According to a recent survey by the Ifo Institute conducted in October, 10.4 percent of these companies report material shortages. This represents a significant increase compared to April’s 3.8 percent and raises questions about the future direction of the industry.
Experts such as Klaus Wohlrabe from the Ifo Institute attribute this increase to strict control mechanisms and trade restrictions for rare earths. These factors could weigh on economic growth if conditions continue to worsen. The electrical equipment sector is also particularly affected, with 10 percent of companies complaining about delivery bottlenecks. In comparison, the proportion of the entire German industry reporting material shortages is 5.5 percent, which corresponds to the average of the pre-Corona years.
Interestingly, the auto industry, which has recently been under discussion due to concerns about a chip shortage, appears almost unaffected in the survey results. Only one percent of companies in this industry reported delivery bottlenecks. This information comes mostly from the early days of the month, indicating a possible improvement in the situation. Klaus Wohlrabe is therefore looking forward to the upcoming results in November in order to monitor developments more closely.
Automotive giant Volkswagen recently warned of possible impending production disruptions. The cause is delivery problems at the important semiconductor supplier Nexperia. Despite these challenges, the current shortage remains well below the peak of the last chip crisis in December 2021, when 81.9 percent of companies reported material shortages. This shows that the situation, although serious, is not as dramatic as in the past.
