In a warning to the population released this Tuesday, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) states that the weather forecast for the next few days points to “rainfall sometimes heavy”accompanied by thunderstorms, and “increased wind intensity on the coast and in the highlands, with conditions favorable to the occurrence of extreme wind phenomena, especially in the southern region“.
In view of these forecasts, Civil Protection warns of the occurrence of floods in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater, obstruction of drainage systems or coastal overtopping, as well as floods, due to the overflow of the bed of some watercourses, rivers and streams.
ANEPC also warns of the instability of slopes, leading to landslides, landslides and others caused by water infiltration (a phenomenon that can be enhanced by the removal of vegetation cover following rural fires in the summer), for the slippery road surface due to the possible formation of water tables, as well as for the dragging loose objects onto the roadsor to detachment of mobile structures due to strong wind.
ANEPC advises the population to adopt preventive measures, such as ensuring the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and the removal of inert materials and other objects that create obstacles to the free flow of water, the adequate fixation of loose structures, namely scaffolding, signs and others that are suspended, and special care when circulating and remaining near wooded areas, paying attention to the possibility of falling branches and trees.
Drivers are asked to adopt a defensive drivingreducing speed and paying special attention to the possible formation of water tables on roadways and not crossing flooded areas, in order to prevent people or vehicles from being dragged into holes in the pavement or open sewage tanks.
Civil Protection also warns the population to Special care when driving along the coastline and riverside areas historically more vulnerable to coastal overtoppingavoiding passing through and staying in these places and to do not practice activities related to the seanamely sport fishing, water sports and walks along the seafront, also avoiding parking of vehicles too close to the seafront.
