MEXICO CITY.- The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumassured this Tuesday that he plans a call to extend his invitation to the Pope Leo XIVwith the aim of the Supreme Pontiff making a visit to Mexican territory, after he expressed his desire to travel to Latin America and, in particular, to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe.
The Mexican ruler recalled that since the beginning of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, went to the Vatican to deliver a letter inviting him to Mexico, which is still valid.
“We are looking for a call with dad. “We are looking to be able to have a meeting here,” said the president during her morning press conference.
However, he clarified that so far there is no confirmationdespite the fact that it has been speculated that the Supreme Pontiff could attend the inauguration of the Aztec Stadiumwhich will host the Soccer World Cup in 2026.
“There is still no information about whether he would come to the inauguration. But we do want him to visit Mexico, we extended the invitation from the first day,” he noted.

The president recalled that the Pontiff’s intention to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe It was publicly stated, after a few days ago, Leo XIV expressed to the media that he would like to visit that emblematic Marian sanctuary, although there is no official commitment.
Claudia Sheinbaum considered that a papal visit would have great significance because of the deep devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexicoand would represent an important step in the relationship between the country and the Holy See.
Pope Leo XIV’s trips to the Middle East
The eventual arrival of the pontiff is framed in a context of institutional rapprochement: since his investiture, Pope Leo XIV has expressed his desire to resume apostolic trips to Latin America, and Mexico appears as one of the main destinations it studies.
But the Vatican’s international agenda – currently focused on the Middle Eastwith confirmed visits to Türkiye and Lebanon– it still does not allow us to define with certainty when a trip to Mexico would take place.
Claudia Sheinbaum stressed her desire for the visit to occur “at its appropriate time,” and reaffirmed her government’s commitment to religious respect and inter-institutional cooperation.
Mexico is a majority Christian country, with 98 million Catholics and 14 million evangelical Christians, according to the 2020 census of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
