Clearing at the University of Sheffield: Everything you need to know on Results Day 2025

Looking into clearing at the University of Sheffield? Here’s what you need to know on Results Day 2025.

After clearing opened at 8am, the University of Sheffield clearing call centre spoke to over 600 applicants in the first two hours – up 12 per cent from last year.

There has been interest in a whole range of courses, but some of the most popular so far have been law, maths, pharmacy, and biosciences.

More than 60 people are on the phones, with a further further on hand to chat with potential applicants.

Director of Admissions at the University of Sheffield, Dan Bancroft, said: “We’re seeing high levels of interest across a wide range of courses this year — particularly in areas like engineering where competition is particularly strong. It’s clear students are thinking carefully about their futures, using clearing not just as a fallback, but as an opportunity to ‘shop around’ and find the best university for them.

“At Sheffield, we have a limited number of clearing places available for high-achieving students, ensuring those who join us through this route are well-equipped to thrive in their chosen courses. At the same time, we’re firmly committed to widening access and supporting talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds to realise their potential — including those exploring opportunities through clearing. To help ease some of the pressure around results day, we’re also offering guaranteed accommodation for students who accept an offer by early September.

“Many students will be making big decisions over the next few days, and it’s vital they take the time they need to consider where they’ll thrive academically and personally. Universities have a responsibility not to add to the stress. Instead, we should support applicants with open days, campus tours and virtual events, so they can explore their options and make confident, informed choices.”

Clearing is open to students who might not have met university offers, have declined their firm choice, or did not apply before the end of June.

It’s always a good idea to have your UCAS number, clearing number, grades, and information and the university and courses your interested in to hand before calling clearing.
