Coalition building in the Netherlands: challenges and perspectives

THE HAGUE / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – After the general elections in the Netherlands, the focus is on forming a stable government. Left-liberal Rob Jetten of the D66 party is aiming to form a coalition quickly, while Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam party has a narrow lead in the votes. The political negotiations promise to be complex as major parties refuse to work with Wilders.

The recent parliamentary elections in the Netherlands have created an exciting political scenario. The left-liberal politician Rob Jetten from the D66 party has positioned himself as a potential election winner and is pushing for the rapid formation of a government. His party has a good chance of forming a coalition, although projections place it on a par with Geert Wilders’ right-wing populist party.

The political landscape in the Netherlands is currently highly fragmented. Both D66 and Wilders’ party could each win 26 of the 150 seats in parliament. Traditionally, the strongest party receives the initiative to form a coalition. But forming a stable government is made much more difficult by the refusal of all major parties to work with Wilders.

Wilders’ anti-Islam party has a minimal lead of less than 2,000 votes after around 99 percent of the votes were counted. Wilders has announced that he will take the initiative to form a government if his party emerges as the strongest force. He emphasized that no D66 prober could begin work until the result was 100 percent clear.

A stable majority would only be possible through a coalition of the four major parties D66, VVD, CDA and the red-green alliance GroenLinks-Pvda. However, the red-green alliance has lost five seats, and top candidate Frans Timmermans has already resigned as party leader. These developments make the coalition negotiations particularly challenging.
