Coldplay is one of the world’s biggest bands, and they’re currently in the middle of a sprawling world tour that’s taken them to some of the most iconic venues on the planet.
A show at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts will live in infamy, however. On that night in Foxboro, Coldplay decided to run the “kiss cam” segment.
Cameras will look around the venue for couples in an effort to get them to kiss one another. The segment is usually done in good fun, but on this night it focused on a couple who was embarrassed to be seen.
That couple was, of course, former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot. In a viral moment that most of the world has seen, Byron and Cabot quickly disengage as they realize the ramifications of being shown together on the video board.
The viral moment led to millions of views and a CEO stepping down from his post, but lead singer Chris Martin says that the controversy doesn’t mean the kiss cam is going away.
How Does Martin Feel About the Kiss Cam Now?
“We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens,” Martin said at a recent show, according to multiple reports.
Martin noticed a fan’s sign that said that they saw the band “three times in three months.”
“You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle,” he said, referencing the kiss cam incident from the previous show.
“We’ve been doing [the kiss cam] a long time and it is only recently that it became a…yeah. Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
In the viral video from last month, Martin attempted to break the tension with humor, but his prediction about the relationship apparently turned out to be true.
“Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re okay,” Martin said as Byron and Cabot’s faces turned bright red with embarrassment. “Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
Coldplay (and the kiss cam) will play at Craven Park in Hull, England before a series of shows at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London. We’ll see if the segment results in any more viral moments on the rest of the tour.
