VALLADOLID.— Yesterday morning, lawyer Jorge Antonio Méndez Mex and his partner Fátima filed a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office, based in Valladolid, after the events that occurred last Saturday, in which they claim to have been victims of illegal detention and violations of their human rights.
According to the lawyer, that day he was heading to the city of Mérida to attend a hearing related to the case of the husband and wife Ángel Méndez and Fabiola Che Yah, who lost their lives on April 29.
As we reported at the time, Víctor Emanuel RB, 20 years old, was driving a Lincoln MKX truck and allegedly did not respect the stop sign after leaving the roundabout located under the Altabrisa bridge.
When invading the pass on the Mérida Peripheral Ring, the guide allegedly ran over the motorcyclists Ángel and Fabiola, who was four months pregnant.
Ángel, 18, died at the scene while Fabiola, 21, lost her son and then died on May 14 at the “Agustín O’Horán” hospital.
Arrest story
Méndez Mex, legal representative of the victims’ family, reported that on the day of the hearing they were arbitrarily detained and falsely accused of drug dealing, just when the person allegedly responsible for the accident regained his freedom. Hours later, both lawyers were released.
“The agents should have been trained in human rights. They even stole my cell phone, where I have confidential information about my clients,” he denounced.
The litigant regretted not having received support from the authorities, including the Secretary of Public Security (Luis Felipe Saidén Ojeda) and the governor (Joaquín Díaz Mena).
“In my 28 years as a lawyer I had never been arbitrarily detained. I regret that the Municipal Police allows this type of abuse against innocent citizens,” he said.
He also called on the Eastern Bar Association to accompany him in this process and expressed that this is not only a union cause, but a citizen fight against abuses of authority.
In addition, he reported that several witnesses to the events have been threatened to prevent them from testifying, which is why he demanded that the Police Director deliver to the Prosecutor’s Office the videos that should have been recorded by the patrols during the arrest.
Méndez Mex announced that the agents involved could face charges of robbery, illegal deprivation of liberty, abuse of authority and even sexual abuse, a crime that, he assured, his fellow lawyer suffered.— DIDIER R. CANCHÉ TEC
Justice
Lawyer Fátima (in a bulletin the SSP referred to her as Lorena “N”) regretted the actions of the municipal agents and maintained that they will continue to demand justice.
Exhortation
“If they did this to us as lawyers, what won’t they do to the citizens who don’t even have the opportunity to defend themselves? It’s time to raise our voices,” he said.
