Sales fell by 2.7 percent compared to the previous year, which is due to weaker demand in civil engineering. The construction industry in Germany is facing a challenging situation. In August, construction companies recorded a 2.7 percent decline in sales compared to the previous year, which corresponds to revenue of 9.9 billion euros. Adjusted for price, sales were even 5 percent lower. This development is primarily due to weaker demand in civil engineering, while building construction is showing positive development.
In contrast to the weak August figures, the year was overall positive for the construction industry. In the first eight months of the year, sales rose by 3.5 percent compared to the same period last year. At unchanged prices, business grew by 1.0 percent. These figures make it clear that the construction industry remains on a stable growth path despite short-term setbacks.
There has been a significant increase in orders, particularly in building construction. Orders here rose by 9.2 percent, indicating continued demand for residential and commercial buildings. In contrast, civil engineering saw orders fall by 7.6 percent. This development could be due to the public sector being less willing to invest in infrastructure projects such as roads, tunnels and railway lines.
The construction industry is therefore faced with the challenge of balancing the different developments in building and civil engineering. While building construction benefits from stable demand, civil engineering must find ways to improve the order situation. Increased cooperation with the public sector and the development of new markets could offer solutions here.
