Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard has joined the cast of RTÉ’s Fair City.
The Irish soap, which has been running since 1989, follows the daily dramas of the residents of Carrigstown, which is in Dublin.
Beloved actress Beverley, who is 68, will soon be swapping the Weatherfield cobbles for the Irish neighbourhood as she joins the cast of the soap as Lily.
The character is the long-lost mother of Gwen (Emily Lamey). She is described as ‘quirky, unpredictable and sharp as a tack’. Fair City’s Executive Producer Brigie de Courcy said during an interview on RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland that she was ‘delighted’ to be welcoming Beverley a new part of soapland.
She also confirmed that Beverley began filming as Lily this week, with her first appearance set to air on February 19.
Beverley began playing the role of Liz in Corrie in 1989. She portrayed the character on and off for over 30 years. Beverley left Coronation Street in 2020, and spoke to us two years later about how it felt like leaving allowed her ‘world to open up’.
‘I loved playing her. But the cast is so big now and the scenes much shorter. I loved the days where the busier you were, the better it was, even though you were knackered because you made so many episodes every week.
‘I knew Liz inside out and back to front, and I just wanted the challenge of playing something completely different. I will not go back.
She added: ‘I feel as though my world has opened up. I’ve not fallen out of love with it but my time there is done.’
In 2024, Beverley expressed her interested in joining another soap – EastEnders.
X user Darren suggested Beverley take on a role in EastEnders as a long lost Mitchell or Slater, and she seemed more than willing to get involved, explaining that she loves the idea.
Other fans seemed equally thrilled by the idea, with AJ suggesting that she play the role of Kathy Beale’s (Gillian Taylforth) rarely mentioned sister, Stephanie, which Beverley agreed would be ‘fab’.
