Coronation Street legend speaks out over ‘nonsense’ and ‘damaging’ claims she’s been axed after 28 years

Coronation Street’s Jane Danson has spoken about the damaging claims on social media that wrongly state she’s been axed from the ITV soap.

Jane has played the role of Leanne Battersby in the ITV soap since 1997, and is no stranger to the drama that takes place in Weatherfield.

Leanne is a hugely loved character in the show, and it’s very clear Jane Danson has no intention of saying goodbye to life on the cobbles. Despite this, a Facebook page has felt the need to create rumours about Jane leaving but more specifically, that she’s been axed.

The post states that Jane wrote a letter ‘after being dismissed from Corrie with only a month’s notice’.

It also says: ‘Jane expressed her disappointment by stating, “I devoted a significant portion of my life to this program, and all I received was a simple, thank you, good luck”.’

Jane has confirmed in her Instagram post that this status on Facebook is completely false. She also adds that sharing fake news like this is incredibly unkind.

She wrote: ‘Can whoever runs coronation street secret news on Facebook stop making up stories and quoting cast members saying things that haven’t been said.

‘Apparently I’ve been axed from the show and have written a letter to say how upset I am. First of all, if I have been “axed” surely I would have been told? Had almost 30 years of people feeling the need to say what they want or making up stories and I’ve never bitten back but I’ve had enough of reading absolute c**p. Just stop it, it’s pathetic. And please stop believing the 99% nonsense these sites keep spinning.

‘It can be so damaging and it’s really unkind. Think before you type.’

In the comments section of her post, many of Jane’s soap friends and loved ones were quick to support her.

Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa Woodfield in Emmerdale, said: ‘They did one saying Kate Brooks [Michelle’s wife and the Corrie producer] has given her spouse a prominent role in the crossover?!?! Just blatant lies! It’s so infuriating isn’t it?’.

Jack P Shepherd (David Platt) was keen to share that Jane isn’t alone in the matter. He said: ‘I was dead online other day Jane!’.

Robert Beck, Jane’s husband, joked: ‘Ah s**t … this not true? I’ve just listed the house on Rightmove.’

The Coronation Street Instagram account also responded and wrote: ‘We keep trying to get all the fake posts taken down.’

Everything changed for Jane’s Corrie character Leanne in 2024, when she joined a cult called The Institute.

As a result of how distant she was from her family, Leanne’s relationship with Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) started to break down. While Leanne was away with the cult and leader Rowan (Emrhys Cooper), Nick started spending more time with Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor).

They began an affair, but ended things for Leanne’s sake.

However, Nick and Toyah couldn’t ignore their feelings for each other and carried on seeing each other. Leanne discovered their betrayal, and then had to deal with her ex beginning a new relationship with her sister.

Yesterday, following the return of other sister Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), Leanne headed to the Bistro to tell Toyah about their sibling returning.

Just as she walked in though, Leanne found Nick proposing to Toyah!

Furious, Leanne threw a drink on both of them before storming back to the Rovers, where Toyah later confronted her and Eva.

After berating Eva for not telling them she was moving back to Weatherfield, Toyah attempted to throw a drink at Leanne, but Eva managed to stop her just in time.

Fed up of her sisters being at each other’s throats, Eva took drastic action by emptying the pub of punters and locking the door, leaving just the three of them to have it out.

Later, while alone with Nick in the office, Toyah admitted that she didn’t want to get married, as she was happy with things the way they were.
