A couple has been gunned down and 10 other people have been injured – including several children – in a village on the Greek island of Crete this morning.
Gunmen opened fire on homes and vehicles at around 11am in Vorizia, in what appears to be a family feud.
None of the victims have yet been named, however police confirmed that a man, aged 39, and a woman, aged 56, had died in the attack.
Two injured men are now ‘under guard’ in hospital, with their participation in the attack under investigation, the emergency services, the national emergency centre (EKAB) said in a statement.
Six other victims were taken to hospital with various injuries in private cars and farm vehicles, while ambulances struggled to reach the site of the shooting.
The attack followed a bomb explosion on a construction site on Friday night, police said.
No injuries were reported from the blast, which was thought to have been caused by a homemade device.
The latest attacks appeared to be triggered by a long-running family feud in the village.
Crete has a history of family vendettas leading to violence, often driven by perceived insults and lust for revenge.
Vorizia is situated 32 miles from the city of Heraklion on the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis.
Authorities confirmed that Greece’s top officials and the head of the organised crime fighting unit were on the way to the island.
An investigation into Saturday’s incident has been opened and a large police and security presence remains in the rural village.
