The CREAR Futuros program of our Hispanic Federation has just been chosen as one of the 12 finalists of Examples of Excellence 2025, a distinction granted by the organization Excelencia in Education. And I must confess that that fills us with pride.
Perla Rodríguez, Senior Director of Education Initiatives at the Hispanic Federation, explains why: “Examples of Excellence It is the only national data-based initiative that recognizes programs with proven effectiveness in increasing the success of Latino students. Since 2005, Excellence “It has examined more than 2,500 programs that were submitted to the competition, and has recognized more than 400, assigning them more than 2.2 million dollars in that period.”
As for CREATE Futures, this is a program that we launched in New York in 2012, and which has since expanded to North Carolina, Connecticut, Florida and Illinois.
A special characteristic of CREAR Futuros is that its implementation depends largely on qualified Latino students who are recruited at educational establishments affiliated with the program.
“These young mentors,” adds Rodríguez, “advise, guide and support first-year students, as well as those who are the first in their families to pursue university studies.”
The help provided by CREAR Futuros mentors covers aspects as broad as tutoring and advice on financial aid and other resources that students can access. For example, those supplied by community organizations that are part of our Hispanic Federation.
“CREATE Futures consists of two main components” summarizes Perla Rodríguez. “One is to provide our young students with the support they need to achieve better academic outcomes. For example, higher rates of completion and degree attainment. And the other component is the promotion of youth leadership combined with financial support for qualified Latino student leaders, selected and hired to serve as mentors.”
A notable aspect of CREATE Futures is the employment of a synergistic approach to improve communication, promote knowledge sharing and meet the ultimate goal of eliminating the inequality gap.
During its almost 13 years of existence, CREAR Futuros has proven effective in increasing GPA (Grade Point Averageor GPA) of students, as well as course completion and graduation retention rates.
