Cristhian Mosquera has rejected Valencia’s improved contract offer and has told the club he wants to join Arsenal this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Arsenal submitted a €14 million (£12.1m) bid for the 21-year-old last week but their offer was rejected.

Valencia have offered Mosquera a new contract until 2028 with a progressive salary increase, however, Las Provincas report that the centre-back has responded by telling the Spanish club that he wants to make the move to Arsenal.

Mosquera has a year remaining on his contract with Valencia and the club are holding out for a deal worth closer to €20m (£17.3m).

It’s understood that Mosquera was initially keen on extending his contract with Valencia but their delay in offering him a new deal allowed Arsenal to convince him to join Mikel Arteta’s side.

Mosquera is currently on holiday after playing for Spain at the European Under-21 Championship last month.

The defender made three appearances for Spain as his side were knocked out by England in the quarter final.

Mosquera started in all but one of Valencia’s La Liga matches last season as the club finished 12th in La Liga.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to complete a £15m deal to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard, as well as a £55m move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

On Tuesday, Arsenal completed a £5m deal to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.

Arteta’s side are also stepping up their efforts to sign Eberechi Eze, who is keen on a move. The 27-year-old has a £68m release clause in his contract with Crystal Palace.
