Croatia establishes 2 months of mandatory military service to strengthen defense

O croatian parliament approved this Friday the reinstatement of mandatory military serviceabolished in 2008, with two months of training for 19-year-olds, as part of strengthening their defensive skills.

The measure was approved by 84 votes in favor, 30 abstentions and 11 against, reestablishing compulsory military service, abolished on January 1, 2008in response to the professionalization of the Army.

Mandatory basic military service will have the duration of two monthswith the first recruitment to begin before the end of the year.

The first recruits are expected to arrive at the Knin, Slunj and Pozega barracks early next year, according to the Croatian news agency Hina.

All 18-year-olds must register for military service and will be called up for military training in the calendar year in which they turn 19.after having undergone a medical examination to determine their suitability.

Those who Those who refuse military service for religious or moral reasons may declare themselves conscientious objectors and will complete three months of basic training in civil protection or four months in local units.

Military training will be remunerated with 1.100 euros monthly and will be counted as seniority, while remuneration for civil service will be lower and established by regulation.

As mWomen are not required to perform military servicebut they can participate voluntarily.

Croatia is a member of European Union and from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and, according to last year’s data, reached NATO’s target of allocating 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the defense sector in 2024, but plans to increase it to 2.5% by 2027.
