In its latest report, the National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that the Cutzamala System reached 96.22% of its maximum capacity, which represents more than 752 million cubic meters stored, ensuring supply for the Valley of Mexico for years.
The torrential rains that have been recorded during the current storm have contributed to reaching this historic figure, which was reached after years of droughts, restrictions and testing.
Until what year is water guaranteed in the Valley of Mexico with the level of the Cutzamala System?
Citlalli Pereza Camacho, director of the Water Basin Organization of the Valley of Mexico (OCAVM), stated that with the current levels of the Cutzamala System, the supply for this area of the country is guaranteed until 2027:
“Current levels will allow supply to be guaranteed for up to 24 months”said the official.
Likewise, Pereza anticipated that if the conditions that have favored this level of storage continue, at the close of the storm the system could reach 98% of its capacity.
It is worth remembering that the Cutzamala System, a complex hydraulic infrastructure that captures, stores, conveys and purifies water, is responsible for providing 20 to 25% of the water consumed by Mexico City (CDMX) and the surrounding municipalities of the State of Mexico (Edomex).
In addition to the abundant rains, the improvement in the operation of the dams and maintenance work in the system have promoted a higher level of storage.
The current panorama contrasts with that of the last two years, when a water crisis occurred that forced the flow to be reduced. The percentage that it has reached so far is significantly higher than that recorded in previous years: in October 2024 it closed the season with 66.72% among its three weights, and in October 2023 with 39.99%.
Now, the inhabitants of central Mexico can take a break, however, having environmental responsibility in consumption is one of their greatest challenges.

Water consumption per inhabitant in the Mexican capital exceeds more than three times what is recommended by the World Health Organization. According to the WHO, each person per day can cover their basic needs with 50 to 100 liters of this vital liquid, however, data from the Mexico City Water System (Sacmex) show that each person in the territory spends 380 liters per day.
