Dagga-laced sweets bust: Eastern Cape woman nabbed

A 54-year-old woman will appear in the Motherwell magistrate’s court after police found dagga-coated confectionery and a dagga plantation at her home in Colchester, Eastern Cape.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Capt Marius McCarthy said officers were on crime-prevention patrol along the N2 near Colchester when they noticed suspicious activity at a house in Long Market Street.

“Members approached the house for a search. Officers searched the premises and found a dagga plantation in the yard. Along with what looked like a manufacturing setup inside the house processing labelled, packaged dagga-coated sweets,” said McCarthy.

Dagga-laced sweets seized

“Police confiscated a large quantity of fudge, chocolates. Jelly-gummy bubble gum laced with dagga, along with 381.4 grams of loose dagga. Two clock humidity scales and an undisclosed amount of cash,“ McCarthy said.

Police estimate the street value of the seized goods at about R50 000.

Officers arrested the woman at the scene. She will be charged with allegedly dealing in drugs and unlawfully cultivating dagga for sale.

Police warn against targeting children

Sarah Baartman district commissioner Brig Asogran Naidoo warned that drug dealers are “targeting innocent children” by spiking sweets to lure them into addiction. She also said police will not tolerate such tactics.
