Daniel Day-Lewis stars and directs his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, debut movie Anemone.
The last time audiences saw Daniel Day-Lewis on the big screen was in the 2017 movie Phantom Thread, before he announced his retirement from acting.
The three-time Oscar winner returns in the upcoming movie Anemone, which released its first trailer on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Anemone is co-written and directed by Daniel Day-Lewis alongside his son Ronan, marking Ronan’s directorial debut. The movie is also produced alongside Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company.
“The Northern England–set film begins as a middle-aged man (Bean) sets out from his suburban home on a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship—one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier,” reads the official longline for the movie.
Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Anemone as the character Ray Stoker, a man dealing with his past in an isolated wooded location. Joining the actor as his co-stars are Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton.

Daniel Day-Lewis’s son Ronan is one of the actor’s three children with wife Rebeca Miller, whom he married in 1996. He first met Miller while acting in a play written by her father, Arthur Miller.
Anemone will have a world premiere at the New York Film Festival in the Fall. It will also be in select theaters on October 3, before expanding on October 10.
