Two of the most anticipated dates of the year will soon arrive in Guadalajara—and the world: the celebration of Halloween in Anglo-Saxon countries on October 31 and the Day of the Dead in Mexico on November 1 and 2. According to popular beliefs, during these days the world of the living connects with that of the dead, giving the environment a high energy charge. Under this context, not only will there be a lot of parties and contests to build altars, there will also be night tours for this future Halloween, such as the one organized by El Refugio in Tlaquepaque; Here we tell you all the details.
El Refugio: from psychiatric hospital to cultural center
Built between 1859 or 1885 – the truth is that no historian agrees -, El Refugio was founded by Fray de Luis Argüello who originally thought of it as a hospital and a religious house, in fact, it has a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Refuge, hence its name.
Colonial style and a land area of 10 thousand square meters, the building has passed through several hands: the Josephine Mothers; Dr. Fernández Del Valle and the Franciscan Mothersthe latter being those in charge of its stage as a hospital.
The Refuge maintained an influx of people until May 31, 1979 —date on which it was abandoned for six years—, it was not until 1985 that The Shelter was restored by the government of Tlaquepaque in order to turn it into a cultural museum and artisan and tourist meeting point.
