November closed with a worrying increase in the number of deaths in las roads of Yucatán, with 28 people deadfour more than in the same month last year.
However, Rene Flores Ayoratraffic engineer and auditor in road safety for him National Accident Prevention Centerdescribed these figures as “very conservative”, warning that the reality could be even worse and that also makes it more alarming.
In a breakdown of road tragedies, Flores Ayora reported that of the 28 deaths this month that has just ended, 18 were motorcyclists, 5 drivers, 3 passengers and 2 cyclists.
“The total number of Yucatecans who have lost their lives due to preventable and avoidable traffic accidents amounts to 261 so far this year.”
“This number could be up to 366 if we consider all the cases, even those who did not die at the scene, but later, when they were treated,” he emphasized.
In his opinion, this analysis of recent months reveals a worrying pattern in road safety: April recorded 18 deceased, May, 22; June, 23; July, 31; August, 22; September, 31; October, 15, and November, 28.
“The figures are disturbing and tell us that we must act immediately,” said Flores Ayora, who advocates for a comprehensive approach to improve road safety.
The engineer insisted on the need to promote coexistence with the urban space, applying “calm traffic” strategies, reducing speed and designing streets that prioritize pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation. “Sharing space is living in harmony.”
In addition, he highlighted the need to reinforce road safety education from childhood to adulthood. “Road culture must be a pillar in our society to achieve a safe and respectful coexistence.”
He also recognized the vital role of local police as guardians of mobility, who must be an active part in promoting road safety.
The second decade of action for road safetywhich covers from 2021 to 2030, aims to significantly reduce traffic deathsafter the objective of reducing these incidents by 50% was not met in the first decade (2011-2020).
“Every year approximately 1.35 million people lose their lives worldwide due to traffic accidents. We cannot allow this to continue,” he said.
Flowers Ayora reiterated its urgent call to action, urging the community and authorities to work together to improve safety on the streets of Yucatán and protect the lives of all its inhabitants.
